Mike Harris, R-Waterford, told @Th_Midwesterner that the debate centered in part on the historical record of socialist and communist governments. “I’ll give you an observation that I made while the resolution or the floor speeches were being read about the history of socialism, right, and how that’s led to downfalls of other nations, and how it’s caused, you know, that that theory of government has caused murders,” Harris said. Harris pointed to starvation and economic collapse associated with socialist governments, arguing that some countries recovered after adopting free-market or capitalist principles. “And you know, I think the resolution does kind of speak for itself, but it’s pretty sad to me that when we’re talking about what socialism really is, we have people on the other side of the aisle that are actually clapping during this floor speech,” Harris said.
