Kundan Lal Saigal’s iconic rendition of the classical thumri "Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye" was featured in the 1938 Hindi film Street Singer, directed by Phani Majumdar and composed by Rai Chand Boral. Long before pre-recorded playback singing became the industry standard, Saigal performed and recorded the song live on camera while acting in the scene. The lyrics and melody were originally composed in the 19th century by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Awadh (Lucknow), who wrote the poignant thumri in Raag Bhairavi expressing grief and exile after being deposed and forced to leave Lucknow by the British Raj in 1856.
