For 2026-27, the salary of an MP will be £98,599. We made this decision after widespread public engagement, and benchmarking against other responsible roles in the UK and around the world. You can find out more about our decision-making below: assets.ctfassets.net/s90k6pr…

Myth: MPs get their home bills paid. Reality: I pay my own mortgage and bills in Rugby. When Parliament requires me in London, rent for the flat is covered, same as any worker required away from home. I pay for my own food.

New polling paints an interesting picture of the public's tax-raising priorities, and a depressing picture of the public's understanding of tax and spending. I have no easy answers, but I do have some rather alarming charts.

🧵27% of MPs who lost their seats at the 2010 general election and were looking for paid employment were still without a job 12 months after the election. So @GullisJonathan's experience is not unusual. 1/
"I think the days when being an ex-mp was something that was wanted or desired are no longer." Former Tory MP Jonathan Gullis says he has not been able to get a job since losing his seat from Parliament.

Lots of tweets doing the rounds suggesting MPs can claim £56 for breakfast. Suspect that figure is linked to the £50 breakfast tweets which have been circulating for years. Anyway, it’s all nonsense. MPs can’t claim £56 or £50 for breakfast. They usually have to buy their own.

Actions like this put good and decent people off from standing for Parliament. Also a reminder that being an MP is a sacrifice on your private and family life.

Linking winter fuel allowance cut with MPs’ legitimate expenses is cheap political point scoring. MPs have to live in two places - there is no choice. Demonising MPs who use their allowances just makes it harder for ordinary people - those without private wealth - to be MPs.

Lots of misconceptions around how MPs’ pay and expenses work. Yes MPs are well paid (though similar to GPs and head teachers and less than Council Chiefs) An after tax salary of £4900 per month is more than enough to pay mortgage, bills, car, support a family etc. 🧵 1/

If this were an MP who did this, it would be (imo) a clear cut case of an offence under Section 10 of the Parliamentary Standards Act 2009, punishable with up to a year in prison.

PSA 2009, s10: An MP “commits an offence if (a) the member makes a claim under the MPs’ allowances scheme, and (b) provides information for the purposes of the claim which the member knows to be false or misleading in a material respect.” Punishment can be up to a year in prison.

And Mr Russell-Moyle’s staff who will now, as a result of this decision, be made redundant.
Should be treated as suspicious for an anonymous complaint to be lodged the day before dissolution and before candidate nominations close, destroying the career of an MP with no chance to clear their name. This is true whatever their ideological leaning.

Let's not forget: when an elderly woman challenged Paul Maynard on his expenses, he exploded and shut her down. He declared: "All I’m hearing is you want to abolish me. You want to stop me doing anything." This is the pensions minister ... now found to have broken the rules exactly as she alleged. No apology yet. x.com/Gabriel_Pogrund/status…

Exc: IPSA is writing to the parliamentary commissioner for standards about Paul Maynard - the pensions minister who broke expenses rules and hounded an elderly woman turned whistle-blower. It is a formal notification that he breached the rules and opens the door to a potential inquiry by the watchdog. Maynard has repaid money - only sanction available to IPSA - but could face further investigation over conduct and treatment of local activist Milly Skriczka.

Small technicality, but when @BBCNews say “IPSA investigators” or “IPSA says”, in most cases they mean the Compliance Officer for IPSA - although it sounds like they work for IPSA, they don’t. It’s a public office set up in law & distinct from IPSA. bbc.com/news/articles/crgygg…
