News Release September 25, 2016 Benton Township, Eaton County-On Friday, September 25, at approximately 9:00 a.m. troopers from the MSP Lansing Post responded to a car vs pedestrian crash southbound I-69 I-69 near M-100 hwy. Preliminary investigation shows that a 52 year-old male from Dewitt Mich., pulled onto the shoulder of the expressway to check his trailer that was having some mechanical issues. As a victim was checking his trailer, a vehicle traveling southbound on I-69 struck him, leaving the scene without stopping to check on the victim. The victim suffered serious injuries from the crash and was transported to University of Michigan Hospital in Lansing. Troopers located vehicle parts from what they believe is from the suspect vehicle. Based on evidence recovered from the scene, troopers are requesting assistance from the public locating a late model, 2017-2023 gray Jeep Compass SUV. The vehicle should have heavy front-right damage. If anyone has information about this vehicle or information related to the crash, you can contact the MSP Lansing Post at 517-322-1907.

Two troopers. Four days. Four events. One title. Michigan State Police Tprs. Maxwell Prince of the Emergency Support Team and Anastasia Mohler of the Marshall Post will compete against troopers from 30 agencies across the United States at the second annual National Top Trooper Competition, Sept. 20-24, 2026, at the @OSHP Training Academy in Columbus. They topped out at our spring qualifier in June and have spent three months of intensive, targeted training at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing to prepare for the competition, on top of full schedules at their respective worksites. This week, they'll be tested in driving, firearms, physical training, and a leadership assessment interview. Stick with us all week. We'll share moments and the final results as they come in. ISP COLD CASE TEAM SEEKS PUBLIC’S HELP IDENTIFYING SUSPECT IN 2015 LAGRANGE COUNTY SHOOTING LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. The Indiana State Police (ISP) Cold Case Team is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect responsible for the 2015 shooting of a LaGrange County man. The Indiana State Police is sharing this information with media partners in Michigan because investigators believe the suspect may have ties to the Sturgis, Michigan, area. On Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, sometime between 9:15 and 10:15 a.m., Rocky Swihart was at his residence on East 350 South near Stroh, Indiana, when a vehicle pulled into his driveway. A male suspect exited the vehicle and spoke with Swihart. As Swihart turned to go back inside his residence, the suspect pulled a firearm and shot him in the head. Swihart suffered severe injuries but survived the attack. The ISP Cold Case Team is seeking information that could help identify the suspect. Police artist renderings of the suspect and the vehicle believed to have been involved are being released based on descriptions provided by Swihart. Anyone who recognizes the suspect or vehicle, or who may have information about the shooting, is urged to contact investigators. Even information that may seem insignificant could help move this case forward. News Release 09/21/2026 Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team to Conduct Training Exercise in Eaton Rapids Eaton Rapids, Eaton County-Residents who notice a large police presence in Eaton Rapids this week should not be concerned. On Tuesday, September 22, the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team will be conducting a training exercise at the former Northwestern Elementary School, located at 400 Dexter Rd, in Eaton Rapids. On Thursday, September 24, the team will also be conducting a training exercise at Oak Ridge Park which is adjacent to the old school. The exercises are part of routine training activities for the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team. The Emergency Support Team created in 1974 specializes in handling highly dangerous and critical incidents, such as hostage rescue, barricaded gunman, high risk arrest and search warrant service. The team is comprised of troopers from around the state.

We Will Never Forget. In memory of our fallen trooper who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day in 2017: Tpr. Timothy J. O'Neill November 11, 1988 – September 20, 2017 Tpr. Timothy J. O’Neill died as a result of injuries sustained while patrolling on a motorcycle in Kent County on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. At approximately 7:45 a.m., Trooper O’Neill was on patrol on his department motorcycle when he was involved in a crash near the intersection of Wolverine Boulevard NE and Belding Road NE in Plainfield Township. Trooper O’Neill was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids where he later passed away as a result of his injuries. Trooper O’Neill joined the Michigan State Police in 2014, graduating as a member of the 126th Trooper Recruit School. He served at the Rockford Post and became a member of the Motor Unit in May 2017. Tpr. Timothy J. O’Neill was the 53rd Michigan State Police officer to die in the line of duty.

Today members of the MSP Tactical Bike Team along with other troopers from around the state are working the UM football game in Ann Arbor. Troopers are assisting UM police and other agencies to ensure fans have a great and safe experience while at the Big House. Go Blue!!
