My days of being on call are over. I’ve turned down jobs making nearly twice what I’m making now because I will no longer carry an on-call phone.
That being said, once in a while, there is an emergency situation or there is a planned release/upgrade/install where I have to work after midnight on a weekend to do some checks and validations or issue some commands following an IPL that consists of system changes, upgrades or fixes. Those I don’t mind. Those I’m flexible about. Those I don’t complain about. Because they’re usually scheduled (at least to some degree - I have advanced warning by at least a day and I’m not being called as it happens), and I’m a team player. No complaints about the occasional late Saturday night working. As long as it keeps me from having to carry an on-call phone, (either all the time or on some kind of regular rotation), I’m always going to be accommodating for such things. Because these types of things actually have something to do with my job and utilize my skill sets. Every time I’ve ever carried an on-call phone in my I.T. career, I’ve never - NOT ONCE - been called for something that actually pertains to my job. No, it’s always someone desperate to get in touch with someone to reset their password. Often it’s an “offshore” contractor in the middle of their day that’s calling me on an “emergency” phone in the middle of my night because they flubbed their password and locked themselves out or something equally stupid. And I don’t reset passwords. I’m not Help Desk. And at my age, there isn’t a company out there willing to pay me what I’d want to have to put up with an on-call phone rotation. I say “never” again, but I do have a number. It’s just a number too high for anyone to match.
Anyhow…when I have to work a random Saturday night once or thrice a year…I’m cool with it. No complaints. Just keep the damn on-call phone nonsense out of my life.
