De rebellen van Hayat Tahrir al-Shama (HTS), de groep die Damascus innam en Bashar al-Assad verdreef en vorige augustus tot dood veroordeelden, zitten nu in de regering in Syrië.
Ahmed al-Sharaa was de leider van HTS. Hij richtte de groep op in 2017, en was de emir tot hij in januari 2025 president werd. Daarna liet hij HTS officieel ontbinden en integreerden de strijders in de nieuwe Syrische staat. Hij was ook bekend als al-Julani, de Al-Qaida-commandant.
HTS heeft een lange lijst van gedocumenteerde misdaden. In Idlib, waar ze jarenlang de macht hadden, arresteerden ze willekeurig critici, journalisten en activisten, en martelden ze gevangenen met klappen, stroomstoten en andere methoden. Ze voerden ook buitengerechtelijke executies uit en gebruikten kindsoldaten.
Na de machtsovername in december 2024 escaleerde het. In maart 2025 vielen hun eenheden en bondgenoten de Alawitische kustgebieden aan. Daarbij werden minstens veertienhonderd mensen gedood, vooral burgers. Het ging om samenvattende executies, marteling, verminking van lijken en plunderingen. De VN-commissie noemde dat mogelijke oorlogsmisdaden.
In juli 2025 volgden vergelijkbare excessen tegen de Druzen in Sweida, met executies, verkrachtingen en het platbranden van dorpen. Ook tegen Koerden en andere minderheden zijn er meldingen van willekeurige arrestaties en geweld.
Maar Jatten en de zogenaamde koningin gaan er zonder schaamte mee op de foto.
