In fiscal 2025, the federal government spent $1.256 trillion on the largest general programs to help low-income people. That comes out to $35,000 in annual expenditures for every person in poverty, or $181,000 per family in poverty.

A Massachusetts family says the state took custody of their teenage daughter after they refused to affirm her as a boy, citing their Catholic faith. The parents allege a school counselor socially transitioned their daughter without their knowledge, then reported them to the Department of Children and Families. Now the state has guardianship, and a restraining order prevents the teen's parents and older brother from contacting her. Attempts to restrict what Americans may do with their own property are not new. The Fifth Circuit panel could hardly have been more hostile toward Louisiana’s effort to protect women and enforce its laws protecting unborn children. Two of the three judges were appointed by Democratic presidents, and both pressed the argument advanced by the abortion-pill manufacturers that Louisiana lacks standing to challenge the FDA’s mail-order policy. But Louisiana argues that abortion drugs are being mailed into the state in violation of its laws, leaving the state and its taxpayers to address the resulting medical and enforcement costs. If those direct injuries are insufficient to establish standing, who does have standing to challenge the policy? Kudos to @AGLizMurrill and Solicitor General Ben Aguiñaga for defending the defenseless.

Having to explain to people who call themselves conservative why it is a bad idea for the federal government, otherwise known as the “state,” to own equity in a private company, especially one benefiting from a diplomatic deal derived from a military operation, is not something I could possibly have imagined 10 years ago. I guess “what time it is” conservatives have finally caught up with the dreams of democratic socialists that began 200 years ago.
