Today, we gathered in Munich for the symposium of the Heisenberg Society. Two speakers explored the history of quantum mechanics and Heisenberg’s role in shaping it. The highlight was the presentation of the prestigious Heisenberg Medal to Reinhard Werner, one of the formative figures of quantum information theory and mathematical physics. I had the great honor of delivering the laudatio. Reinhard then reflected on Heisenberg’s legacy and the foundations of quantum mechanics, before we concluded with a fascinating lecture on attempts to bring quantum physics and gravity closer together. Warmest congratulations, Reinhard, on this richly deserved distinction

US inflation: 2.08% 🇺🇸 Inflation is stabilizing near the target. The market doesn't need any more excuses. It needs action. The Fed should begin cutting. cc: @pulte, @JoeSquawk, @EconguyRosie, @LynAldenContact, @LukeGromen, @RaoulGMI, @josephwang, @EricLDaugh.

American quantum innovators, are you up for the challenge? The Challenge: demonstrate fault-tolerant quantum computers with at least 100 logical qubits. The Deadline: October 19. Apply for @ENERGY’s Quantum Genesis Q Competition: bit.ly/4j858Bs

Getting diesel from Russia tells you that everything is and will be fine

Weird. I have the vague memory of Trump saying that he would end the Ukrainian war quickly also with tariffs and sanctions.
President Trump says after discussion with President Putin that Russia will supply large quantities of diesel to global and U.S. markets, starting with more than 300,000 tons immediately, to help lower prices.

Dear Prime Minister Ambani, Please accept my humble apologies for not realizing that you are the real boss of India. Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete? There are many areas of India, as there are in all countries, with no Internet access, which denies children the opportunity for education and for small businesses the opportunity to sell their goods to a global market. Starlink would change their lives for the better. Thank you 🙏

I am told Navi Pillay calls it “Artificial Intelligence”

Not sure why it would sound super crazy to any science-fiction fan. There are obvious paths for that to happen, if, for example, SpaceX holds the keys to become multiplanetary. It is going to sound crazy when you indicate an unrealistic & unreasonable timeline for that, though!
This will sound super crazy, but I see a path to SpaceX being worth orders of magnitude more than the current Earth economy

How do you like them Apple Intelligence models?!?
Of course, that’s your contention. You’re a first-year machine-learning engineer. You just got finished readin' Attention Is All You Need, probably watched a Karpathy video too. So now you’re convinced everything is just transformers and scaling laws. That's gonna last until next month when you discover convolution, and then you're gonna be talkin' about inductive biases and locality and how CNNs were actually incredibly compute-efficient for vision. Then you're gonna read the FlashAttention paper, and suddenly everything's about IO complexity and SRAM and how FLOPs don't matter because the whole goddamn thing is memory-bandwidth bound. That'll last until somebody shows you an MoE model, and then you're gonna be in here regurgitating DeepSeek, talkin' about expert parallelism and active parameters and how dense models are economically obsolete. Then six months from now you'll write one shitty Triton kernel, look at an Nsight trace for the first time, and start telling everybody Python isn't actually the bottleneck because the GPU is asynchronous. And by next year you're gonna be standing right here explaining to me that your 400-billion-parameter model is fast because you turned on CUDA graphs.

There are a number of problems here I have spent a lot of time of my life on. For example, area laws in two spatial dimensions.
This contains a shocking list of problems in quantum information, many-body physics and quantum computing, the field that are dear to my heart. There are too many, but let me pick the following. 1. Proof of area law in 2D. 2. Spin-one Haldane gap 3. Parity is not in QAC^0 4. Constant-error Aaronson-Kuperberg conjecture 5. Unitary VOAs generating conformal nets. Things are changing fast. I cannot even imagine what will happen over the next few months, let alone a year.

“roughly” can do a lot of legwork
Elon Musk: We're sending Starship to Mars in roughly 2 years! 🚀

About a month to go! So exciting!
Many Starships will go to Mars in 2 years, when the transit window opens again. The first wave will be without people and the second wave, 26 months later, with people, provided the first wave does not increment the crater count on Mars.

This is why I have trust issues
How many Starships will go to Mars without people in ~1.5 years and *with people* in ~3.5 years? “First wave” / “second wave” and “many Starships” for defining the first “wave”would suggest a goal of, say, three starships with people in ~3.5 years. I have doubts.

Indeed there are several more results in the quantum area, including about entanglement theory 🤯

We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results. github.com/openai/math
