Historian of women in 20th C. Togo| Assistant Professor of WGS @ Harvard| Yale Ph.D. | Writing a book about the Nana Benz |Former Refugee| Against Borders|

Some 20 yrs ago, I came to United States at the age of nine straight out of a refugee camp in Benin. I'd been a refugee since I was two-years-old and I spoke no English and had no formal education. Today, I am now officially a Yale-trained Ph.D. with a prize-winning dissertation.

Literally, none of this makes any sense. They’re always telling us AI is gonna create these incredible futures, but how exactly? They never say. How is AI gonna double everybody’s lifespan within two years? This is just fraud at this point.
Dario Amodei: We may be only two or three years away from AI systems being better than humans at almost all tasks. “I call it a country of geniuses in a data center.” “Imagine tens of thousands of geniuses, smarter than a Nobel Prize winner across many fields.” “They could cure diseases and extend the human lifespan.” “I wouldn’t be surprised if we were able to double the human lifespan.” “They may even build robots for themselves and project themselves into the physical world.” “There are all kinds of questions around the balance of power.”

I’ve been doing this with makeup assignments and it’s working beautifully.
I’m done with undergrads submitting papers they’ve “written.” There’s just too much AI use. I’ve decided that next year, students will write short papers during class time. They will conduct research ahead of time, and bring printed out sources they’ll use as references.

many of our languages disqualify european impositions esp re gender qualification to their incessant need for "salvation".
This is exactly the case in Ewe. Our Paternal aunts are also our fathers. We call them Tashi, female fathers. maternal aunts are also our mothers me just distinguish between older (ga) and younger (vi) in relation to our parent.

“Black people are often photo-ready. Photo-eager,” Hanif Abdurraqib writes. “We’ve already got fly, we already believe ourselves to be fly: why shouldn’t someone want to take our photo?” In the work of the photographer Andre D. Wagner, the tender intimacy of Black life takes center stage. Some of Wagner’s images show moments of profound, quiet interpersonal intimacy. Others display raucous joy. “We don’t have to be told that we are fly, but it doesn’t hurt to get some confirmation, by way of a camera pointing in our direction,” Abdurraqib continues. See more of Wagner’s photographs: newyorker.com/culture/photo-…

Pleased to announce @Curaffairs has put in place one of the strictest anti-AI policies in publishing. Newsrooms across the country are embracing AI writing and laying off writers. Our magazine is doing the opposite, ensuring we remain handmade. currentaffairs.org/news/why-…

Replying to @MariusKothor
Same with Yorùbá. There are no words for cousins and uncles. We have Baba kékeré (small/younger daddy) for the younger uncles and Bàbá wa or Bàbá Àgbà for the older uncles. For siblings and cousins, you are simply ẹ̀gbọ́n or àbúrò. Yorùbá also doesn't distinguish genders

So for a paternal aunt who is older than your father, she is “Tashiga” or Big female father lol

I think often about how social relationships are conceptualized in Ewe. For example, I've been thinking about how we do not distinguish between siblings and cousins. We are all seen as siblings, and in practice, it's true. I actually think of my cousins as my siblings.

Paris Marx is fantastic. I got into city planning years ago because of his work and I'm a devote listener of his podcast "Tech Won't Save Us." He's a powerful voice of reason in this age of technofascism.
Tech journalist Paris Marx says tech companies' claims of "superintelligence" are "a mix of science fiction and delusion on the part of the people who are running these companies," as well as a "very effective way to distract from the real harms that we're seeing."

I'm pleasantly surprised by this...
Ben Affleck says AI is simply matrix multiplication, linear algebra and floating point calculations, and however convincingly it sounds like a person, it has nothing to do with thought, humanity or feeling “Nor do I believe, and I think it’s important to draw the distinction between what AI does, which is simply predict the next token or the next word in a sentence, then add that word on, run it back to the machine, do a lot of computation and pick the next word." "That is a very different thing than sentience or thought. And I think we need to be really clear about that because it can be convincingly, in an illusory way, sound like thought or like a person." "But let’s be real clear. This is matrix multiplication. This is linear algebra. These are floating point calculations. It has nothing to do with thought, humanity, or feeling.”

Our matching attire gave me the opportunity to demonstrate how the textiles the Nana Benz sold were not just simple consumer goods but also mediums through which social relations are both articulated and reinforced.
