interface researcher; currently exploring tools to support human creativity and understanding

San Francisco
about a year ago, i stopped sharing as much on this platform. it had changed too much from what it had used to be, and many of my mutuals who i used to interact with here had left. or their tweets had stopped showing up on my feed. but i still wanted a public outlet to share parts of my life online. and so inspired in part by similar experiments by @upcycledwords and @cowjuh, i made a little telegram bot that i could text that would publish the text messages to a feed on my website. i called it the bulletin. and over the last year, it’s become a record of the thoughts and feelings happening in my life. it’s been nice having a quieter place on the internet to share things to. it feels like a space that i’ve carved out for myself to explore the way i want to show up in the world. i re-read the whole thing recently start to finish, and parts of it felt cringe, but i think that’s just apart of figuring things out. with the recent changes to twitter, i think i will try sharing more things here again. and so, to re-introduce myself to those who have been following me here, hello! here is a slice of what has been happening in my life over the last year👇 matthewsiu.com/bulletin

Search the transcript by keyword or prompt Then squish the transcript around the results so you can skim them in context
Built a tool for investigating Anthropic's released Mythos transcript It gives you an overview of behaviors flagged across the conversation, then lets you jump to key passages in context matthewsiu.com/mythos-map

The design here draws on some past work done in collaboration with @andy_matuschak Specifically, when trying to make sense of a pile of long, unstructured documents, it can be helpful to gather the important snippets into one place so that you can see them together This makes it easier to notice patterns, form hypotheses, and figure out what to do next nitter.net/MatthewWSiu/status/182…
📣 Excited to share Latticework, a text-editing environment aimed to help synthesize freeform, unstructured documents ✍️ Made in collaboration w/ @andy_matuschak

This is still a WIP, so any feedback and ideas are welcome I’m also interested in working with safety/alignment researchers to adapt this to real research workflows and see where it’s actually useful You can try it here: matthewsiu.com/mythos-map

what i love about improv piano is that i can only play smoothly if i play how i’m feeling and so sometimes, when i’m feeling something complex that i can’t describe, i play the piano, and the music becomes a mirror

This tool emerged out of a conversation with @ArthurConmy about how he makes sense of agent behavior I think there is much more to be built here in investigative tooling for alignment researchers If you or someone you know would be interested in chatting, please reach out via DMs

dream with us! the dreams can be collaborative with enough people contributing
Dream Together is a little side project I've been dabbling with over the past few weeks. It's been a really fun journey learning about local ML and breath of fresh air to think about something different. The project started with me tinkering with local image diffusion models on my macbook. It was interesting enough for a crude website where a handful of contributors could enter a thought every hour, which my macbook would pick up and generate a photo from. Then I dove into audio, learning about all kinds of folk instruments and ML approaches to both generation and aesthetic judgement. Eventually I also explored video generation, which adds a certain depth to the experience. Here are a few of my favorite dreams from this week

Today we’re sharing the most detailed scan ever taken of a living human brain. None of us were ultrasound scientists before this. We worked backwards from a desire for brain interfaces and taught ourselves physics, ultrasound, electromagnetism. This is a story four years in the making (1/n)
We recently obtained the highest-resolution 3D images of the human brain ever taken from outside the skull. This is the first look. Introducing Aleph, a research lab building brain interfaces for the telepathic future. (1/n)

Imagine every pixel on your screen, streamed live directly from a model. No HTML, no layout engine, no code. Just exactly what you want to see. @eddiejiao_obj, @drewocarr and I built a prototype to see how this could actually work, and set out to make it real. We're calling it Flipbook. (1/5)

Also playing with gestures. Draw to point at things on the screen, and the system can point back using a docked cursor in the corner

There are a lot of interesting interactions to be tried with gestures + speech, I enjoyed @Dianadotlu's recent essay on this diana.lu/point-n-talk Also, the computer-controlled cursor is courtesy of @FarzaTV's new project Clicky
Hey, I'm open-sourcing Clicky. Go forth into the wild and build the future of education and the future of AI interfaces, my friends. I'm happy to have given a spark. Enjoy! github.com/farzaa/clicky
