Drones just flew into the most dangerous part of Category 5 Hurricane Polo! 😲 One of my former college professors, Dr. Wadler, flew directly into Polo today to help deploy drones designed to explore areas of hurricanes that are too dangerous for humans and research aircraft to enter. It’s incredible to see this technology being used to gather data from one of the most powerful storms on Earth, and even cooler to see someone who taught me playing a role in it! @JoshWadler

Rain bands from Hurricane Nolo to reach Hawaii later today... Over the next 24 hours, Nolo is expected to make a slow but sharp turn toward the west, keeping the core of the storm well south of Hawaii. However, the threat from heavy rainfall will continue to expand, with rain expected to become more widespread and intense across the Big Island later today. Up to 20 inches of rain is expected in some areas, with isolated totals potentially reaching 25 inches. This could lead to catastrophic flooding and mudslides, especially across the island's steep terrain. Nolo may stay south of Hawaii, but the rainfall threat remains by far the most concerning aspect of this storm.

A nor’easter looks likely to rain out your weekend if you live in the Northeast... Rainfall totals of 2-4+ inches are expected from parts of the coastal Mid-Atlantic into New England, with locally higher amounts. The heaviest rain is expected to focus across eastern New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and southern New Hampshire, where some areas could see 4-5 inches or even more. This much rainfall could lead to localized flooding, especially where heavy rain persists for several hours.

Hurricane Nolo is strengthening as it approaches Hawaii... Nolo has strengthened into an 85 mph hurricane this morning, and further intensification is expected over the next several days. The latest forecast brings Nolo to 140 mph Category 4 strength by Sunday, although some additional strengthening cannot be ruled out. The storm is expected to remain south of the Big Island through Saturday, but tropical-storm conditions are expected to begin tonight, with hurricane conditions possible Saturday, particularly across higher terrain. Heavy rain is also becoming a major concern. Catastrophic flooding and mudslides are possible across eastern and southern portions of the Big Island and Maui, while large and damaging waves are expected along parts of the Big Island coastline. Nolo is then expected to turn westward and move away from Hawaii, but the storm could remain a powerful major hurricane into early next week.

A rare September nor’easter will bring powerful wind gusts to the Northeast this weekend... A powerful coastal storm is developing off the East Coast, whch will bring strong wind gusts across much of the Northeast, with the highest gusts expected near the coast. Current guidance shows wind gusts potentially reaching 50–60 mph from the Mid-Atlantic into New England, with locally higher gusts possible immediately offshore. Forecast models show the strongest winds peaking from Saturday into early Sunday. What makes this setup especially unusual is the timing: only about 1% of nor’easters form during September. This could be an unusually strong storm for this early in the season.

Hurricane Polo remains an absolute monster as it heads toward Baja California... Polo has once again become the third strongest hurricane recorded in the Eastern Pacific by virtue of wind speed, with the latest satellite imagery showing an exceptionally well-defined eye and no signs that an eyewall replacement cycle is imminent. The hurricane is expected to remain a Category 5 through tomorrow morning, before gradually weakening this weekend as wind shear increases. Even with that weakening, Polo is forecast to approach Baja California Sur as a strong hurricane early next week. The track has shifted slightly west, with watches potentially needed for portions of the Baja California Peninsula as early as tomorrow. Heavy rain could begin affecting Baja California Sur as early as Sunday, bringing the threat of life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Meanwhile, moisture from Polo could spread into the Southwestern U.S., contributing to heavy rainfall and flash flooding this weekend and early next week.

HURRICANE POLO HAS REACHED CATEGORY 5 STRENGTH FOR THE THIRD TIME! Polo has once again exploded into a 180 mph Category 5 hurricane, marking the third separate time the storm has reached Category 5 intensity. This is an extraordinary milestone: Polo is the first hurricane on record to reach Category 5 strength three separate times with all three peaks occurring in the Eastern Pacific. And at 180 mph, Polo has once again reached the third-highest wind speed ever recorded in the Eastern Pacific. Polo is certainly one for the history books.

BREAKING: Tropical Storm Gonzalo has formed in the Eastern Atlantic... Gonzalo has become the 7th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, but significant strengthening is not expected. The storm is forecast to pass over the Cabo Verde Islands, where a Tropical Storm Warning is currently in effect, before gradually weakening and dissipating over the Atlantic within the next few days.

FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY for Hondo, New Mexico! This is due to the Rio Bonio exceeding its banks, which has already lead to evacuations. Do not attempt to travel unless under an evacuation order or fleeing flooding!

Hurricane Polo is about to become a Category 5 hurricane for the THIRD time... Polo remains a Category 4 following an eyewall replacement cycle, but NOAA Hurricane Hunters found that the cycle is nearly complete and the storm is already showing signs of strengthening again. Polo is forecast to regain Category 5 intensity tonight or Friday morning, potentially reaching 160 mph. If it does, this would mark the third separate time Polo has reached Category 5 strength during its lifetime. Afterward, Polo is expected to gradually weaken as it turns northward toward the Baja California Peninsula, before moving inland across northwestern Mexico. Meanwhile, moisture from Polo could spread well northward into the Southwestern U.S., potentially contributing to heavy rainfall and flash flooding this weekend and early next week.
