Somaliland has always been on the right side of History - fighting fascism, defending freedom & standing for democracy!
During my recent visit to Somaliland, I visited the monument of Sergeant Omar Ku Joog, a Somaliland Camel Corps soldier killed fighting Italian forces in 1940 alongside Captain Eric Wilson during WWII.
Wilson later received the Victoria Cross and believed Omar’s bravery deserved recognition too.
His story reminds us that Somalilanders stood against fascism long before today’s debates about freedom and democracy.
DID YOU KNOW?
Heroes of different faiths rest side by side at the Hargeisa War Cemetery in the Republic of Somaliland, commemorating those who served and sacrificed during the World Wars.
Their legacy is connected to the wider Allied struggle, in which Britain and the United States joined other nations to defeat Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
Today, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and other heroes are remembered with equal dignity, reflecting Somaliland’s enduring heritage of tolerance, coexistence, and respect for all.
