Nearly two million people brought in, and the skill shortages are still here. Mass immigration was supposed to fix the labour crisis. It hasn’t.
That is what happens when volume replaces selection. Inflows have risen sharply; gaps in the trades, engineering, and specialist healthcare have not closed in proportion.
Extra workers who cannot do the missing jobs do not fill vacancies, they add pressure on housing and services while the shortages remain.
If the aim is to close skill gaps, entry has to be tied to verified, hard-to-fill roles and judged by whether those shortages actually fall.
Until then, millions imported and shortages intact is evidence the mix is failing, not a case for more of the same.
