We need to protect original journalism in Sri Lanka. Investigative reporting takes time, money, expertise, resources and often considerable risk. Simply lifting that work, adding a token credit and monetising it is not journalism—it’s benefiting from someone else’s investment. Technology will keep changing how news is consumed, but original reporting still has to be paid for. We need a modern framework that protects journalists, demands proper attribution and ensures fair compensation for commercially reused work. If we don't protect the people who produce the news, eventually there will be no one left to do the hard work.

"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing..." The inhumane acts of Easter Sunday have left an immeasurable weight to bear, not only for those who lost loved ones, but for their families, friends and communities; for the families of those who carried out these attacks; and for those who failed to prevent such a tragedy. I spent countless days in Katuwapitiya, walking from home to home, listening, consoling and working alongside families as they tried to rebuild their lives. I have heard their cries for justice and understand the pain that lies behind them. I hope this verdict brings some measure of closure and peace to those who have carried this pain for so long. But as we seek justice, we must also ask ourselves: are we punishing the innocent along the way? Justice must hold those responsible accountable, while ensuring that those who had no part in these crimes are not made to carry a burden that was never theirs. May we learn from this tragedy, heal, and hope that we never have to face such darkness again. 🙏
