Mitch McConnell's chief of staff was asked a very simple question: Can the senator still talk and communicate clearly with him behind closed doors? Terry Carmack wouldn't answer. Reporters also asked Carmack whether McConnell is capable of properly doing his job. He kept walking without answering. McConnell returned to the Senate this month after more than three months away following a June fall and hospitalization. Since returning, he has been pushed through the Capitol in a wheelchair, and recent videos have shown him responding to reporters with gestures rather than answering their questions. Days later, video from a Senate committee meeting showed Carmack leaning over and prompting McConnell during a vote. McConnell's name was called twice before he audibly voted “aye.” Now Carmack is being directly asked whether McConnell can communicate clearly behind closed doors and whether he can still properly perform his duties as a United States senator. He won't answer. The public can see what's happening. Questions about whether Mitch McConnell can continue performing his duties aren't going away, and the silence from his chief of staff only adds to them.
