They discussed what it takes to develop, finance, and operate battery storage across US power markets, and why recent revenues only tell part of the story.

A gas turbine with distillate backup could set the WEM’s capacity price benchmark 26% below a seven-hour battery.
For developers and investors in Western Australia, that potential change matters for long-term capacity revenue assumptions.

Sam Wilson (Cadent, Director of Energy System Operations) on why gas network decommissioning won't scale linearly with falling demand. The network's resilience comes from how interdependent it is, which is also why you can't remove sections as usage drops.
His expectation: a long period of near-zero change, then a tipping point where decommissioning suddenly becomes economical, then a tail off. Right now that point is still a distance away and isn't in Cadent's current investment cycles.

Netherlands: operational BESS fleet is 677 MW / 1.5 GWh, mostly co-located with wind and solar. Pipeline of 3.2 GW / 12.0 GWh flips the model: 91% standalone, four-hour duration as default, sited where grid congestion allows. Groningen alone holds 46% of pipeline capacity.

US data centers: on-site gas runs about $125/MWh against $66/MWh from the grid, nearly double. But at Nebius' cloud rates of $20-25M/MW-year, that premium is only 2-3% of revenue. When financing is accruing and deadlines loom, paying up to power sooner pencils out.

Germany: an unconstrained 2-hour battery earned €191k/MW/yr in August, down 7% on the month. aFRR capacity still made up about half the stack, but year-on-year it's down from 88%. Day-ahead and intraday now supply 31% of revenue, against 7% last August.

Spain: a year ago we called 5 GW of BESS by 2029 an upper bound for the whole market. Authorised capacity alone now sits at 6.4 GW, already 28% past that ceiling. The operational fleet is still just 239 MW, so the gap between paper and steel remains wide.

Emma Pinchbeck (CEO, Climate Change Committee) makes a case that's easy to miss in the net zero debate: electrification isn't just a climate policy, it's already the cheaper option.
60% of the UK's emissions reduction pathway to 2040 relies on electrification. And households with access to renewables and an EV are already saving around £1,600/year compared to the average fossil-fuel-dependent household - rising to £1,900/year against households on oil heating specifically.
Her point: regardless of where you stand on climate change, electrifying the economy is how you get cheaper, more efficient energy into people's hands.

WEM: batteries now set the wholesale price in 90% of dispatch intervals, up from 18% in early 2025. And most of that comes from the charging side, not discharge. The market price increasingly reflects what a battery will pay to charge, not what a generator needs to run.

Record heat in PJM sent July's TB4 spreads soaring. Real-Time spreads averaged $895/MW-day, up 161% on last year and 88% above June.
Almost all of it came from three days. An extreme heat wave over July 1 to 3 carried 56% of the month's entire spread.
July 2 broke records across the board: an all-time PJM peak load, and the hottest average temperature the grid has ever recorded at 97°F. Washington DC hit 102°F, breaking a mark that had stood since 1872. That single day carried a quarter of the month's spread, worth 14 ordinary trading days.
