More on zeroing... The customer originally set a standard of 4" for zeroing groups, which remains. However, we kept getting zero data with a suspicious cluster of 4" groups. Laziness, optimism, lack knowledge about how to measure... all combined to mean we couldn't really trust that data. So we added AI finding of targets, target center, and bullet holes to JMAP. It works on a variety of zero targets as well as full targets like the USMC threat, USPSA, FBI Q20 and a few others. We've now measured about 17,000 zeros - correctly. With detailed metrics on 170,000 shots. We've also used it in equipment testing (various sniper rifle configurations and the NGSW among others). Zeroing is fundamental. Good data of it is fundamental. It's in the JMAP Electronic Scoring app, and we've pulled it out into a JMAP Groups app that I'll be putting for free in the app store when we have bandwidth (something in the 4th quarter I hope). I use it for all my zeroing... very nice to use. Green square is the center of the target it found. Adjustable. And the green circle is the center of the groups it found. You can lasso a group if shooting on the target more than once between adjustments. Also shown are the Shot Group Analysis - all done automagically.

A big thank you to @TeamHornady for offering some support on the reloading videos I’ve been doing. The new 30 cal 177 A-Tips look great and should be interesting to work with in the load development portion and the new case trimmer is awesome. It’ll be a huge time saver since I’ve been doing case trimming, chamfering and de-burring as separate operations for a while now.

I think what I’ll do for load development on the new 177 A-Tips for .308 is show how I’ve been testing new bullets lately by starting with three powders, Winchester StaBall Match, Hodgdon Varget and VhitaVouri N550 and narrow down from there to hopefully find something great.

These are really excellent triggers at their normal price and at $99 they’re a no brainer. I bought two of them the last time I saw them at this price and they’ve been great. The only triggers I like more than these cost about three times as much.

Here's the thing about using higher round count groups to determine zero on something like an AR and why I think it helps. Most AR type rifles, most any combat style rifle really, unless it's a pretty high end gun with match ammo, isn't going to be a true sub MOA gun. If yours is, you can get there with less ammo. Most common rifles like this with even good bulk ammo people buy and do most of their shooting with are likely going to be something like 2 to 2.5 MOA guns at best and maybe worse than that. Using three round groups, it's statistically possible that those three rounds that look like they're grouping pretty good could be at the outer edge of the actual dispersion circle your gun would shoot with a large enough group. This is why people sometimes think their clicks in their optic aren't adjusting correctly and they're chasing their zero. Five rounds is slightly better but ten rounds is significantly better for starting to see the actual dispersion of the rifle and getting an idea of your true group center without spending a lot of time or rounds to figure it out. Getting an accurate zero by finding and adjusting the true center of the group you're actually capable of shooting with that rifle and ammo with at least ten rounds will greatly increase your precision at all distances and your hit probability on longer shots because it improves your margin of error before you miss. You don’t have to do it and most people don’t but IMO it gives a little better results.

Here's a video using a bore scope to compare a new 300 Norma barrel to one with about 560 rounds on it to show the difference of barrel wear over time. These over bore magnums really accelerate wear vs more standard cartridges.

This is how I’d recommend zeroing a red dot on an AR if you want a precise zero that will help you make hits out at 300+ yards. Take as much of yourself out of the equation as possible. Pick your zero distance to maximize point blank range. 36 yards works well on most ARs. Use a contrasting target and aiming point like white paper and a black circle or paster. Use a solid rest, bipod and rear bag, rest across sand bags or a range bag. Go prone or use a bench and get a repeatable cheek weld to the stock. Shoot three to five rounds to make sure you’re on paper and in the ball park, (if you’re not, move closer) and then make a coarse adjustment to get close. Fire a five shot group the best you can and then measure from the center of the group to your aiming point and make your adjustment. 1/2 MOA clicks are about 3/16” at 36 yards. Fire a ten shot group to confirm and if you need to, make another adjustment. Next move to 100 yards, again with a target with a contrasting aiming point just big enough to see and aim at at that distance and preferably with an actual vertical line running up the center of the target from the aiming point. Fire another ten shot group and measure from the center of the group over to the vertical line and make your windage adjustment to center it on the line if needed, if not, you’re done. If you made an adjustment, fire a final ten shot group to confirm it’s centered on the line as close as you can get it. Turning down the brightness on your dot to where you can just see it helps refine the aiming point. Give your barrel some time to cool between groups, don’t rush it. Get your elevation correct at 36 yards and your windage correct at 100. It probably seems like a lot of work and a lot of rounds compared to what most people do but it really pays off as distances and shot difficulty increase.
