People hate to admit this, but all the cartoons we enjoyed were WOKE AS HECK for the time.
As we grew into adults, our tolerance for such subversion began to drop. Sometimes seasonal rot made is more obvious, but even from the beginning it was clear.
Rewatching ATLA, I had to roll my eyes at the "girl power" episodes with Katara. It was clear that this was shoehorned in to posture and make a statement. Both her and Toph were way too overpowered for the lack of discipline and practice.
Low-key, the Avatar franchise is actually a fairly good barometer for the dominant liberal socio-political mood when each series is written.
