Jody White & Tom Howe, both nominated by the U.S. Taxpayers Party, are running for Michigan’s highest court despite neither holding a valid Michigan law license. So how did they get on the ballot in the first place? Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office says the candidates are legally permitted to appear on the ballot. However, appearing on the ballot & being legally qualified to take office are TWO different things. Huh?? 🤯 Michigan's Constitution requires Supreme Court justices to be licensed to practice law in Michigan and to have been admitted to practice for at least 5 years. Jody White and Thomas Howe have acknowledged that neither currently holds a valid Michigan law license. Well then that leaves some important questions: Who verifies that judicial candidates meet the constitutional requirements to serve? What happens if voters elect someone who cannot legally take office? What qualifications did these candidates certify when they filed their paperwork? And why are voters learning about these licensing problems from an investigative news report rather than through a clearly explained election process? These are questions Michigan’s election officials NEED to answer. Getting your name on the ballot & being legally qualified to serve are not the same thing, fine.
