South Africa's gambling epidemic, fuelled by massive advertising for gambling sites:
Advertising doesn’t get much more aggressive than this. Even the small screen features a betting ad. Our airports are also blanketed in these ads. Tighter national regulations to curb this can’t come quickly enough. Enough already.

This is British public school ethos. I kid you not. Empty brains and muscular Christianity. And Carey Francis said something similar: it's about faith and football. And somehow, Kenya thinks the elite public school is the model for Kenya. The Ominde report even said that "it would be churlish to gainsay the great benefits that we have gained from our English educational heritage. From the practical, though not the philosophical point of view, it is the starting point of our future planning.” Ominde went to Alliance. #IwenttoAlliance
“There are only two things that will save Africa— Christianity and football.” Sir Edward Brandis Denham, acting Governor of Kenya, speaking at Alliance High School’s first Prize Giving Day in June 1927, quoting the words of someone he described as “an eminent Bishop of England”.

🤣🤣🤣 "wives must return dowry" then claim compensation from their parents? This is poor jurisprudence. A wife is never present in her own dowry negotiation, so why demand she return what she never received and never demanded? {*And what of those who pay their own dowry?}
Good News; High Court rules that wives must return dowry after divorce. In a ruling, the court says that even if the dowry was paid to the wife's parents,she must return the dowry to the husband and later demand compensation from her parents. Since the marriage is over and divorce has been finalised, not returning dowry implies that the wife owes her husband. If the husband paid Ksh 1.2m, the wife must return the money. If he gave them 50 cows and 100 goats the wife must return 50 cows and 100 goats or more depending on the value at that time.

RAO was in detention for six years, back again for a year in 1988, and again for another year until his final release in 1991 after which fear for his life led him to flee to Norway to seek political asylum. Raila returned to run in the 1992 elections and was elected MP for Langata. Raila was in the opposition until the NDP (National Development Party) merger with KANU and this period marked the onset of a wave of artistic and creative interpretation of his political moves; the merger itself inspired tons of cartoons, the most memorable one featuring a tractor (the Tinga symbol of the NDP party) being swallowed by a cockerel (the KANU symbol). Did colonial powers truly leave Africa, or did they just replace indigenous law with their own? Colonialists imposed individualist constitutions and Western legal frameworks across the African continent. Kenya’s 1897 Reception Date erased native legal systems, locking them into the marginalized category of customary law that persists today. Sideeyeing two assumptions: 1. That people’s time and labour can be tapped for free via a vague email. 2. That every writer ambushed for an interview will speak eloquently. Writing is reflective work, it is not reactive. Ideas sit, marinate, boil, then cool down to find form.

💯. He also spoke very ill of Mandela. In addition, he and his family also have hostility towards democracy. That's why his son was one of the January 6 insurrectionists! A convicted felon. So of course non racialism, democracy and constitutionalism, are anathema to him.

Ethiopia and Eritrea are locked in what I call a 'mutuality of strategic regret' - each side rueing missed opportunity to 'finish the job', alter political geography and create permanent deterrence. Eritrea fell out with Ethiopia after Abiy accepted Pretoria peace accord in 2022 and allowed TPLF to reconstitute and govern again when - from Asmara's perspective - the strategic end goal was the total capitulation and complete evisceration of the group. Asmara hoped entrenched strategic influence in Addis and a permanently neutered Tigray would allow it regain contested borderlands, guarantee its long-term survival and confer it with strategic depth. Eritrea regrets not to having 'finished the job' after Pretoria when it had the troop strength, presence and opportunity, in addition to 'regret' at not being able to apply maximum pressure on Abiy to 'stay the course.' The TPLF in the final phases of the Tigray War working in coordination with OLA pushed hard towards capital Addis from multiple axes, at extraordinary cost, then stopped abruptly, primarily in response to direct American pressure and warning not proceed. That decision to succumb to external pressure, not to 'finish the job' and take the city, overthrow the Abiy government has since continued to rankle with TPLF hardliners. PM Abiy Ahmed, in the last four years, has consistently framed the independence of Eritrea and the decision to cede the Red Sea coast as a 'catastrophe' for the Ethiopian nation and state; a strategic blunder that 'must be corrected.' A lethal mutuality of regret binds the belligerents, animates the war calculus of the two adversaries. Familiarity with this dynamic is essential to understand the new momentum toward war...

So those close friends in high places, will they all be traveling to Harare for the funeral at Glen Forest Cemetery on Thursday? (Flashback, 1977: Patrick Shaw arrives at the funeral of Wakinyonga aka Nicholas Mwea…orders mourners to lie face down. Arrests were made that day).
