The state of NFT in 2026: Still pretty much mirroring 2024.
🗒️ TL;DR:
Cold, hard truth: Most new NFT collections die almost immediately.
➡️ First 1-2 weeks:
98% of 2024 drops had fewer than 10 trades in week one. That's already below 1 txn/day for nearly all of them.
➡️ Overall:
96% of collections are "dead" (no volume, almost no sales, silent socials).
Among ones still labeled active, the vast majority have tiny or zero weekly volume.
➡️ Average lifespan:
1.14 years in the last detailed study (from start of project to last real activity).
Most speculative drops go quiet in days, not years.
A small core of blue chips + utility/gaming/physical collectibles still trades. Everything else is the long tail.
💡 Note:
No 2026 study repeats that exact metric just yet, but sources and CT in general still treats the same pattern as true.
🤔 So?
You can interpret this info from different angles, but to me, today's NFTs are for two type of 'audiences':
1. Traders/speculators: Mint as many as they can, sell everything just before the hype dies.
2. Collectors: 'In it for the art' - they mint and HODL because they like the art and/or community surrounding it.
Nothing wrong with either, obviously. But make sure that when buying NFTs, you know what you're getting yourself into.
