Remember the Rule of Thirds…
Group #1: The 1/3 of your team/organization will buy in right away. They will trust you, believe in you and know that you want them to be successful.
Group #2: The next 1/3 of the team/organization that wants to buy in… but hasn’t fully committed yet. They do things the coach wants them to do, but they consistently additional convincing and additional motivation to prove how buying in will help them and the team.
Group #3: The remaining 1/3 of the team is the group that does not want to buy in at all. They have severe trust issues, they question everything and they don't believe in the coach or program.
I have learned that too many leaders put too much focus on Group #3.
Your time, effort and love would be better spent on Group #2. With just a little extra effort and focus, you can get Group #2 to fully commit. And in doing so, you will have 2/3's of the team bought in.
Then you can shift your attention to Group #3. Your staff and the other 2/3's of the team can work towards getting these last few team members to move in the right direction.
After adequate time, any team member in this bottom 1/3 that is not willing to fully commit to the program, standards and culture… any player that is not willing to buy in… needs to be bought out (and excused from the team/organization completely).
