Late last week I got @moderna_tx's mRNA vaccines - one each for flu and Covid. Sitting in the @cvspharmacy in Kendall Square, I couldn’t help but reflect on the long and winding road from launching Moderna in 2010 to this moment. Not only have we proven that mRNA vaccines are safe and effective for treating Covid, RSV, and the flu, we are showing that the same technology has significant promise to treat cancer. We are realizing the vision we had so many years ago, of an mRNA platform that we can apply to treat a wide range of terrible diseases. And to see it in action, all I had to do is go to my local pharmacy. Long and winding though the road may be, I have a feeling we’re still only at its beginning. I’m proud of the pioneers at Moderna who have helped get to this point and are working every day to extend the platform to other major unmet medical needs. As an aside: I urge everyone to get your vaccines this fall. It can be easy to forget that flu was once a leading cause of death in the United States. Six years ago Covid killed an estimated 15 million people in 24 months. Congratulations to our @ProFoundTx and @gatesfoundation on this innovative investment agreement. Eclampsia and preeclampsia affect millions of mothers and babies each year, but are woefully understudied. Pancreatic cancer was long considered one of medicine’s deadliest diagnoses. But today, the FDA approved @RevMedicines' Daraxonrasib - a new treatment that has in trials nearly doubled how long patients survive compared to standard chemotherapy. Daraxonrasib works by targeting a molecule, KRAS, that until now was considered undruggable. The story is a reflection of biotech at its best - pioneering what was once believed impossible, persevering through booms and busts, bringing together enabling research, academic labs, and industry to create breakthroughs for patients and their families.  The FDA deserves our commendation for approving this life-changing treatment with the urgency it demanded, and for moving quickly to allow patients to begin accessing it even before formal approval. Who can say how many lives have been extended - how many more birthdays and weddings and anniversaries will be celebrated - thanks to this wonder of science. As a teenager in Montreal listening to “9 to 5,” I never imagined my path would one day cross with Dolly Parton’s. But during COVID, Dolly’s support of Vanderbilt helped fund early tests for Moderna’s vaccine. Later, she encouraged her fans to get vaccinated as only she could (I remember her saying, “Don’t be such a chicken squat, get out there and get the shot!”). Dolly evidently cared deeply about other people and using her platform for good. I like to think she would be proud that the same mRNA research she supported is now showing promise to help treat a whole range of diseases beyond COVID, from the flu to cancer. Today marks an important milestone for @moderna_tx , for the field of mRNA, and for the many people working to bring new possibilities to patients. This morning, Moderna and Merck announced positive Phase 3 results for adjuvant treatment with intismeran autogene, an individualized mRNA therapy for melanoma, in combination with KEYTRUDA, in patients with completely resected stage IIB-IV melanoma. The study met its primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival and a key secondary endpoint of distant metastasis-free survival. This is the first positive Phase 3 result for an individualized neoantigen therapy, and the first for an mRNA-based cancer therapy. When we founded Moderna in 2010, the idea that mRNA could become a new class of medicines was outright rejected. The idea that we might use it to create a therapy designed around the unique mutations in an individual patient’s tumor was even further from reality. Today’s result is a reminder of what can emerge from pioneering: asking questions others have not yet asked, following the science where it leads, and persevering through uncertainty. There is important work still ahead but today is a moment to recognize the extraordinary work behind this milestone. Congratulations to the entire Moderna team, our partners at Merck, and the investigators who made this study possible.
