Great clip, generally too much focus on peak fastball velo when:
- velocity floor is higher
- faster & better offspeed
- defensive positioning improved
- much higher quality of defenders
"The guy that used to hit .300, I'm sorry to tell you, is going to hit .240, .250 today. It just is what it is."
@JoeyVotto breaks down why the league does not have more players like Luis Arraez and explains how baseball's evolution has led to that trend.
Guess we’ll see but don’t think they’d move Julio, Cal, Naylor. Just need career avg seasons.
Healthy Donavan & Emerson. Resign Randy?
Tougher since it’s more guys not performing to projections/expectations.
The Mariners lineup needs significant change this offseason, beyond merely hoping that Raleigh returns to form in 2027.
Seattle has scored the fewest runs in MLB this season, with the worst BA with RISP of any AL team.
The pieces don’t fit.
Pete Crow-Armstrong has faced 28 teams and 286 pitchers in 22 stadiums so far this season, which isn't over yet
Joe DiMaggio faced 7 teams and 321 pitchers in 9 stadiums in his entire (regular season) career, which spanned 13 seasons between 1936-1951.
It's a different sport.
I think it’s a pretty good insight to the difference between old & new school.
Mainly, people interpret it as ‘everything you hit should be pulled in the air’ but that’s not how it should be.
It’s the idea that if you could do those very broad things ‘well’ then good things would happen even without practicing them, like pulling the ball for power, that broke.
Just a vast difference between only being able to discuss/apply feel versus much more specific stats or data.
Sometimes moving on the rubber gives self-inflicted yips.
Pros who move have usually done it for years.
Otherwise the higher level up you are you assume there is a purpose for where you stand pitch shape/approach wise
So, weird question, but why don’t more pitchers utilize the ENTIRE rubber. I don’t think people realize the angles you can create just by moving over 12-14 inches so that you reach the other side of the rubber.
If I have a 24in pitcher’s plate(the rubber) and I adjust every two inches, I can essentially create 12 different angles to throw from
For context here is the MLB ball next to the MiLB ball (Florida State) both from this season.
MLB on the right, is hand sewn, the seams are wider and flatter and the ball looks and feels rounder.
One of the more annoying parts of pro ball - the different ball.
Besides spin characteristics the “feel” is quite a bit different, too.
IIRC I they can’t produce equivalent balls across all levels at the volume required. There’s no machine that can stitch an MLB ball.
Not as a dunk but baseball has always been more, for lack of a better word, constrained. Plus relatively open with data.
So it’s more straightforward in not just collecting but applying.
