In northern Ontario, a century-old hydroelectric station is getting a new lease on life. Earlier this month, OPG kicked off the redevelopment of its Bingham Chute Generating Station with the facility's breakers opened for the final time - marking the end of one era and the beginning of a new one. Located near Powassan, Bingham Chute has generated clean, renewable hydroelectric power for Ontario for more than 100 years. The two-unit facility began operating in 1923, with a maximum generating capacity of about one megawatt. The redevelopment will modernize the station with the installation of two one-megawatt generators, which will be ready to serve Ontario for decades to come. Learn more: opg.com/bingham

School is almost back in session — and safety is always worth reviewing. As families enjoy the final days of summer and get ready for back-to-school routines, Bobbi gives us a quick water safety refresh. Remember to always wear a life jacket and never stray close to hydroelectric stations and dams, where water levels can change quickly and with little to no warning. Give these areas plenty of space, stay out of posted danger zones and stay safe. Happy long weekend! #StayClearStaySafe

In OPG's new "How it Works" series, we go behind the scenes across our operations and projects, starting at our Wesleyville site in Port Hope. At this location, OPG is proposing to build a large new nuclear generating station capable of producing up to 10,000 MW of clean, reliable power. To assess the site for its potential nuclear future, OPG and its partners are now conducting environmental surveys, part of the first phase of the project's Impact Assessment process. What's involved in this important work? And what does it take to build a large nuclear project in Ontario? Find out below.

On the Nipigon River, north of Lake Superior, OPG's Pine Portage Generating Station (GS) has been serving Ontario for more than 75 years. To celebrate this big milestone, the station will be opening its doors to the public on Sept. 12. With four units and a maximum output of 145 megawatts, Pine Portage has been a part of the province's energy mix since 1950, when it came online just in time to support Ontario's post-war growth period. Today, the station continues to play an important role for Ontario's energy needs, providing enough electricity to support more than 140,000 homes. Interested in taking a closer look at this icon of mid-century hydro development? You can reserve your spot to tour Pine Portage GS on Sept. 12. Spots are limited. Learn more: opg.com/northwestern

In this Supplier Spotlight, we feature BWXT, a proud partner helping advance OPG's nuclear projects and operations. The company's facility in Cambridge is a key player for Ontario's nuclear sector, as it manufactures large, heavy nuclear components - from steam generators to heat exchangers. At this manufacturing hub, BWXT is now putting together the massive reactor pressure vessel that will form the heart of the G7's first SMR at Darlington. Workers are also machining, welding, and assembling the large steel vessels that will make up new steam generators for Pickering Nuclear's refurbishment. With nuclear demand growing, the company is now expanding its Cambridge facility to ensure it can continue to deliver heavy-duty components for OPG and the province.

OPG’s Nuclear Safety team recently received the prestigious Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Technology Transfer Award, a recognition of the team’s leadership in advancing nuclear safety and risk assessment practices. The award specifically recognizes a first-of-its-kind initiative led by OPG, in collaboration with Conexus and EPRI, to refine multi-unit nuclear risk assessment methodologies for CANDU reactors. Building on OPG’s strong and long-standing focus on nuclear safety, the program has further strengthened the organization’s ability to assess risk across its multi-unit CANDU fleet. Looking ahead, this work will also help inform the future deployment of multiple Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) on shared sites, supporting innovation while maintaining the highest standards of nuclear safety. It’s an achievement that is helping ensure even stronger risk-informed decision-making while reinforcing OPG’s commitment to nuclear safety excellence.

Today, OPG’s SVP Enterprise Strategy and Growth, Kim Lauritsen, joined Minister of Energy and Mines, @Sflecce, and Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries, @samoosterhoff to announce $500,000 in early Growth Readiness Funding for St. Clair Township to support local planning and assessment of potential new electricity generation, including nuclear, at OPG’s Lambton site. As Ontario’s electricity demand is forecast to grow significantly in the coming decades, the 1,200-acre site could play an important role in helping meet the province’s future energy needs. The site is already zoned for generation and located near existing infrastructure, including railway access, a deepwater dock, and features from previous generation operations. From 1969 to 2013, the site was home to the Lambton coal-fired generating station. Today, OPG is working with St. Clair Township, Indigenous Nations, and local stakeholders to explore what future development could look like — and the potential benefits it could bring to the community. In northeastern Ontario, along the Matabitchuan River, OPG’s Matabitchuan Generating Station (GS) Redevelopment Project is making strong progress. Last summer, the project team safely demolished the original station after an impressive 110 years of service, then quickly began preparing the site for a new hydro facility that will help power Ontario’s future. This summer, construction has ramped up, and the new Matabitchuan GS powerhouse is taking shape. In recent weeks, crews have installed forms and rebar to support concrete pours for the powerhouse walls. The project is expected to be completed in 2028. It’s an important investment that will help secure another century of clean, reliable, and affordable power for Ontario. Learn more: opg.com/matabitchuan

OPG's proposed new nuclear project at its Weslevyille site in Port Hope is moving into the next phase of the federal Impact Assessment process. Recently, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (@iaac_aeic), in collaboration with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (@CNSC_CCSN), issued the final Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines and associated planning documents, which outline the studies, information requirements, engagement activities, and assessment factors OPG must address in its Impact Statement. OPG will now undertake detailed technical and environmental studies to prepare an Impact Statement that addresses these requirements. The Impact Statement will include information on various topics, including socio-economic impacts and benefits, Indigenous rights, interests, and knowledge, and project design considerations and alternatives. The potential project could provide up to 10,000 MW of clean, reliable electricity to meet Ontario's growing energy needs. Learn more about this exciting milestone at opg.com/wesleyville.
