I've been dreaming of this C++ profiler for my game for over a year. It's now here. It shows me the slowest code logic that runs over my game components in real time. Each one is a lambda that I can find at the file name and line number. An hour after I made this, I already optimized my game significantly by actually seeing what was slow and then optimizing it. For example, I optimized a C++ lambda from 750us down to 50us (cost per frame). This level of introspection into my game is god-like vision. Not seeing any perf impact of having this on either, so it's on by default.

AI is getting more and more impressive. Its bug diagnose ability wasn't this capable 3 years ago when I started on this game. I can literally throw 2 screenshots side by side at it and have it inspect my 198k lines of C++ and 10k lines of shaders, and point at the correct source of the issue. This might be my new solution for when I am too lazy to work on the game: just throw random bugs at it and get motivated that way. (However, I still prefer to fix the code myself unless it's a 2-3 lines tiny bug fix.)

I got blocked for this by the astro turf account. The copy cat message every week is amusing.

The AI astro turf account selling a product but pretending to be a game dev got me blocked for this.

This is why game writing is so bad. They love to describe and hate to show what a character does. The few games that don't do are known for great stories. The standard has been very low for games.
"In real life, we have only two sources of information about the character of the people around us: We judge them by what they do and by what they say (particularly the first). To recreate the reality of a character, one must show what he does and what he says. In the field of characterization, one action is worth a thousand adjectives." Ayn Rand, The Romantic Manifesto

Webdevs have had a deep resentment towards gamedevs out of inadequacy. Now, armed with AI slop they are rising from the manholes to gloat on how gamedevs skills have been replaced, and that the webdevs can just as easily make a game using AI. They give it a try for an hour and quickly discover they still lack the skills and understanding of the fundamentals to actually make and ship a game. So the webdevs slink away into the darkness, under the cover of "look what kind of game (trailer) I vibe coded in a weekend" while never releasing a Steam demo or, god forbid, an actual game. Have you noticed that their demos are hosted everywhere except on Steam? That is the fear of objective judgement pushing them away.

2 years into the game dev and I am finally adding a particle editor, instead of just tinkering on the game entities directly. I have recently added my first 3D texture for the flow map lookup to make the fire gpu particles feel a little more alive.

Blender + AI is still pathetic for non-static objects. Here is a glance at the complexity of even a simple manual model and rig I make by hand. A similar work produced by AI through MCP requires a ton of hand fixes that takes more time when making this myself. Here I have: - deform bones ("DEF_") that are exported to the game engine (other bones types are not exported) - target bones ("TGT_") are copies of deform bones that drive the deform bones by exact transform but are not exported to the game engine, as they are mainly helpers to animate the rig - control bones ("CTRL_") that drive the target bones are NOT exported to the game engine, they are used to simplify the animation process - mechanism bones ("MCH_") are bones that help control bones for more complex rig logic that I don't have here yet due to the simplicity of this rig All this is still too much precision for MCP AI to get right. Oh well, back to wait another year before I try AI again for this work.

The good new is that AI is helpful in writing python scrips to create helpers for me. For example a common annoying manual operation is to copy all DEF bones into a new group TGT, and then add for each bone pair add bone constraint to snap DEF bones to TGT bones with Copy-Transform operation.

"If you can't afford to buy a game, steal it!" was accepted for decades until AI came around and, suddenly, you are required to spend your money. This is why principles matter.
Anti-AI artists, hear me out: you can’t lose a commission that was never going to exist. Most people you’re attacking couldn’t afford to hire you in the first place. AI gave them a way to make something anyway. You’re allowed to hate the tool. But sending the VTuber army after someone with an empty wallet won’t get you paid.

Where are the AI improvements? As I search for a new annoying bug in the latest stable Windows 11 build (where the freaking screen flickers every few minutes!!!) I run into this browser bug. Sigh.

I heard too many such horror stories of how game devs were treated by game companies, so I chose to keep away from them. I was lucky that Amazon decided to give games a try. So I got to experience game work for several years without game company treatment. piped.video/watch?v=PaCtJ_Wy…

Art of Fiction is even useful for my gamedev work.
"Exposition is the communication of knowledge which the reader requires in order to understand a scene. One rule about exposition is: do not let it show. By 'do not let your exposition show,' I mean: do not devote any action or line merely to explaining something. Make the exposition part of some statement which has a different point, a point necessary for the progress of the scene. If you have a complex exposition to give, you will, in the beginning, be anxious to give it all at once. It will seem to you that you have to tell the reader everything, or he will not understand you. Do not be fooled by this. The story will carry if you make just one point clear. A few sentences later, you divulge something else, and so on. Feed one bit of information at a time. The ingenuity you can exhibit in regard to exposition is unlimited. You can make advantage out of a liability. Instead of being burdened with your exposition, you can feed it at the points where it fits the narrative or dialogue and makes the scene more dramatic."
