What if we could treat the brain circuits involved in depression without surgery? That's the question driving the work of Jan Kubanek, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at @WashU (@washumedicine) and recipient of the 2026 One Mind Harvey Schwartz Rising Star Award. Nearly 300 million people worldwide live with depression, and roughly one-third don't respond to available treatments. Dr. Kubanek is working to change that. His research uses noninvasive focused ultrasound to precisely reach the brain circuits involved in depression, targeting specific regions without surgery. "Disclosure is not the problem. Stigma is." @UmaRChatterjee entered her scientific career already publicly open about her lived experience with serious mental illness. She was warned it would disqualify her from the field. Instead, she became a neuroscience PhD candidate, leading the first known protein-level studies in human OCD brain tissue, board member of the Society for Neuroscience’s Upper Midwest Chapter, and a member of the One Mind Lived Experience Council. In her new essay, "The Cost of Telling the Truth: Disclosure, Serious Mental Illness, and the Systems That Decide Who Belongs," Uma makes a case that goes far beyond her own story: that disclosure without structural support becomes extraction, and that the goal isn't to pressure people to share, it's to build systems where honesty is no longer punished. In 2025, Uma R. Chatterjee, an award-winning neuroscientist, science communicator, & mental health advocate, was selected to join the One Mind Lived Experience Council. An NIH TL1 Predoctoral Fellow & PhD candidate in Neuroscience at @UWMadison, @UmaRChatterjee studies the neurobiology of OCD & novel therapeutics. Her work is deeply informed by her lived experience with OCD, PTSD, depression, & bulimia, bringing together cutting-edge research with real-world insight. She serves as President of @OCDWisconsin, a board member of the Society for Neuroscience’s Upper Midwest Chapter (@SfNtweets), and an advocate for @IOCDF. Through global speaking engagements and her podcast A Chat with Uma, she connects science, policy, and lived experience. Launched in 2024, the One Mind Lived Experience Initiative ensures that individuals with lived experience help shape research priorities, workplace frameworks, and innovation strategy, embedding community voice into system level change. In January 2019, a snowboarding accident left Dr. Edward Twomey with a brain bleed and an emergency craniotomy. Dr. Twomey's work has since uncovered how temperature affects neurotransmitter receptor function, revealed the mechanism behind the brain's primary signaling chemical, and opened a promising new path for neuropsychiatric drug development.
