"My dad passed away two summers ago, and his old Irish setter, Ruby, still swims out from his dock every evening. Dad had a little place on the lake, and every night after dinner, he would walk down to the end of the dock with a cup of coffee and Ruby right behind him. They would sit there together and watch the sun disappear over the water. She was his shadow for 11 years, and wherever he went, she followed. After the funeral, we brought Ruby back to my house in town because we thought keeping her close to the family was the kindest thing to do. But she never settled in. She stopped eating properly, paced through the halls at night, and spent hours standing at the back door as though she were waiting for someone. After a couple of weeks, my mom finally said what the rest of us had been avoiding. “That dog needs to go back to the lake.” Ruby lives at the lake house now, and my mom stays out there with her. Almost every evening, around the same time Dad used to take his coffee down to the water, Ruby walks slowly to the end of the dock. She stands there for a moment, looking across the lake, before carefully stepping into the water. Then she swims one slow loop beyond the end of the dock, passing the same stretch where Dad used to cast his fishing line. When she comes back, Ruby climbs onto the boards, shakes the water from her coat, and walks over to the place where Dad always sat. She lowers herself down in that exact spot and faces the sunset until the last light disappears. The vet says there is nothing physically wrong with her. She is simply an old dog keeping an appointment she has kept for most of her life. We still drive out there most weekends. Sitting on that dock at sunset with Ruby’s gray head resting in my lap is the closest I ever feel to my dad now. Do you think dogs understand that someone is never coming back, or do they keep waiting because love has become part of their routine?

Chris Fowler reflects on the most powerful and emotional game he's ever called: "It was a game between Purdue and Ohio State. There was a young cancer patient named Tyler Trent, a superfan who had essentially been adopted by the team. He battled cancer courageously and was in very bad shape. His dying wish was to see them win that game. They were massive underdogs. Somehow, they got him out of bed and into the car to make it to the game. He was just hanging on, man. It was one of those magical nights. It would have been a corny movie if it had been on film. They blast Ohio State, and it's a party. They wheel Tyler through the end zone to the locker room to wait for the team after the victory. It was just an incredibly powerful emotion, and I was barely keeping it together. I said, 'Every Boilermaker would say, "Tyler, this one's for you."' It's my favorite game I've ever called because it went way beyond sports."

New statement from Scott Pelley:   There has never been anything in America like 60 Minutes.   The Sunday tradition is the most successful program of any kind in history. For more than a decade, its innovative growth on every major online platform has extended its reach to countless millions around the world. This spring, at the end of our 58thseason, 60 Minutes grew rapidly with an unheard-of 9% jump in viewers on CBS.   “60” has been the number-one program in America for decades because our beloved audience finds integrity, quality, and humanity in our stories. When stewardship of the program passed to my colleagues and me, our responsibility was to expand energetically into a new age of media technology while preserving the values our audience expects. Now, the new owner of our network is casting this legend aside, apparently to curry a moment of favor with the Trump administration.   The waste is heartbreaking.   Last month, 60 Minutes lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause. Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos.   For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified. To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them. Recently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast. Giving politicians control over 60 Minutes interviews is not how this is done. Finally, incompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management have wreaked havoc. In a case involving one of my stories, the entire program came within 19 minutes of not getting on the air at all.   At 60 Minutes, we have fought harder than anyone knows to save the program that became an American icon. We owed that to our millions of viewers. I am deeply moved by the thousands of wishes we have received to “keep up the good fight.” Most of the men and women of CBS News are still in that fight. But now the collapse of values at the top has become untenable. The leadership of 60 Minutes is no longer recognizable. The principles I hold dear are gone, and so I must leave as well.   I depart after 37 years at CBS with one emotion—a heart brimming with gratitude for the men and women of CBS News who encouraged and enriched my work, very often at the risk of their own lives. I pray for a day when those people and their ideals are honored again—a day when sanity, competence, and courage return.   Scott Pelley
