What we heard from Ronen Bergman on the Friday night news, should have instantly become the main headline on every media outlet. According to Bergman’s report, the Shin Bet now keeps track of who journalists are in contact with. They began doing this when David Zini was appointed as the head of the organization. This is complete and total madness. In his report, Bergman goes on to say that the Shin Bet – the Israeli equivalent of the FBI – now collects digital data from the phone calls we all make. They gather metadata: who called whom, the date and time, call duration, and geo-locations of the parties involved. According to Bergman’s report, the Shin Bet under Zini’s leadership, received complaints from Netanyahu about leaked information provided to journalists who are critical of him. The Shin Bet then began to use the tools at its disposal in order to investigate whom specific journalists are in contact with. This is a move used by dictatorial regimes. It would appear that several laws are being broken by doing so. In every reasonable democratic country, and in Israel up until today, conversations with journalists have been confidential, which protects the journalists’ sources. Now, the Shin Bet has begun keeping tabs on who journalists are in contact with. Who approved this move? What false pretense is being used to justify the secret service’s surveillance of journalists? This week all the masks came off. Zini revealed his true face. Netanyahu’s controversial appointee as head of the Shin Bet, is now tracking to whom journalists speak. This, after taking a meeting with Netanyahu’s very close associate who demanded he open an investigation against one of Israel’s main news stations. In addition, at a recent event Zini openly stated that his allegiance and loyalty lie with the political leadership – meaning they do not lie with the state or the rule of law. From his statements and actions, it is also clear that Zini is anti-LGBTQ, anti-women, and seeks to erase all remnants of the October 7th massacre. Additionally, Zini had written a ‘professional opinion’ document aimed at helping Netanyahu evade giving testimony at his criminal corruption trial. The AG must get involved in this issue, and the Supreme Court must provide all the necessary backing. The brave employees of the Shin Bet must stand strong and prevent illegal actions from being carried out. Zini proves on a near daily basis that he is ‘supplying the goods’ for the tyrant who appointed him. Every moment he continues to head the Shin Bet, is another moment the State of Israel is put in danger.
