In the Mail on Sunday, FSU General Secretary Lord Young of Acton discusses his experience of being cancelled in 2018 — and the toll it took on his mental health. Over the past five years, more than 62,000 people have been arrested for speech-related offences —between 34 and 40 every day. Only around 20 per cent are convicted, but those who aren’t still risk having a ‘non-crime hate incident’ recorded against their name. Police are logging around 65 of these incidents every day. But things are about to get worse. The new ‘National Centre for Information Defence’ brings the total number of shadowy Whitehall bodies monitoring our speech to ten. Anyone posting something deemed ‘intemperate’ on social media about issues such as small boats or drag queen story hours could find themselves before a magistrate or facing disciplinary proceedings at work. Lord Young’s experience of being cancelled was one of the reasons he founded the Free Speech Union in 2020. He explains the profound impact cancellation can have on a person’s mental health. Lord Young has taken the opportunity to collaborate with clinical psychologists Carole Sherwood and Andrew MacLeod on a survey examining the psychological impact of being cancelled. Of the 255 people in their study — all of whom were helped by the FSU — 80 per cent said their mental health had been adversely affected, while 27 per cent said they had been prescribed medication as a result. Even more alarmingly, 20 per cent placed themselves in the most severe depression category. Several men have been arrested overnight on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act amid what appears to be a threat to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, a major base for US operations in Iran. The security posture has also been stepped up at US airbases in Suffolk, with an air ambulance denied access to Mildenhall airspace last night while returning to base. It remains unclear who has been arrested and what stage the potential plot was at, but the police operation comes months after the IRGC made threats towards Fairford and the "British monarchy regime". This week, GB News revealed that American personnel at bases in Suffolk had not been made aware of plans to house small boat migrants at RAF Barnham. One councillor told me that when he spoke to some USAF officers about the possibility of unvetted Iranian migrants being placed near the base, "They had no idea about what was going on there. They had no idea what was planned for there." Several Iranians who have crossed the Channel illegally have been arrested by counter-terror cops. The IRGC has claimed that it controls several smuggling routes and that covert operators have been moved into Britain. So far the Trump administration has mentioned the RAF Barnham plans and the security risks it poses to the US airbases.
