🎓 PhD Position in Neuro Biomarker Research — University of Gothenburg
🇸🇪 Gothenburg, Sweden
📋 Department: Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Sahlgrenska Academy
👤 Supervisor: Michael Schöll
📅 Deadline: October 16, 2026
⏳ Duration: 4 years full-time doctoral education (initial employment up to 1 year, renewable)
📋 About the Project
This PhD is embedded in REAL AD, a large-scale prospective study run jointly with the entire public primary care network of Västra Götaland Region (111 health centres), Sahlgrenska University Hospital's memory clinic, and the region's innovation platform. The project validates a screening approach for early Alzheimer's disease that combines remote digital cognitive testing with blood-based biomarkers (BBMs) — a response to the fact that newly approved anti-amyloid antibodies work best early, but most patients are currently diagnosed in primary care settings not equipped for early detection. Nearly 5,000 participants have already been recruited, with over 3,000 blood samples collected and a sub-cohort undergoing CSF, MRI, and optional tau-PET assessment. Early results already show higher plasma p-tau217 tracking with poorer cognitive performance, and the study's validation phase began in February 2026 with over 90% retention at 18-month follow-up. The PhD student will explore associations between BBMs (including multi-protein panels) and digital cognitive assessments, establish validated thresholds for these tests against reference methods like CSF proteomics, and help drive data-informed implementation of these tools into routine clinical care.
🔬 Ideal Candidate
- Completed second-cycle (Master's-level) degree, or equivalent (240+ credits with 60+ at second-cycle level)
- English B/6 level or equivalent
- Strong grounding in scientific theory and relevant research methodology
- Documented analytical/scientific writing ability, shown through an academic paper, thesis, or similar
✨ Why Apply
This is a rare opportunity to join a study already flagged as European best practice for precision medicine in routine care — with a huge, well-characterized cohort (nearly 5,000 participants), strong industry backing, and direct ties into an entire regional healthcare system. Rather than working with limited pilot data, students step into an implementation-ready pipeline positioned to genuinely shape how AD screening is done in primary care.

🎓 PhD Research Fellow in Terrestrial Ecology — University of Agder
🇳🇴 Kristiansand, Norway
📋 Department: Ecology and Biodiversity
👤 Supervisor: Associate Professor Luc Bussière
📅 Deadline: November 5, 2026
⏳ Duration: 3 years (fixed term)
💰 Salary: NOK 550,800 gross/year
📋 About the Project
This PhD explores one of evolutionary ecology's most fundamental questions: how do natural populations respond when humans impose strong, sustained new selection pressures? The project takes advantage of a rare natural experiment in Brazil, where decades of biological pest control in agricultural landscapes have created contrasting histories of selection on pest populations. Combining field sampling in Brazil with laboratory experiments and statistical modeling, the successful candidate will quantify genetic variation in complex traits and test whether these different selection histories have driven resistance evolution or other life-history shifts in crop pests — work that bridges basic evolutionary theory with the applied challenge of predicting how sustainable biological control really is over the long term. Extended research stays in Brazil are central to the project, alongside collaboration opportunities in Scotland and a wider international network.
🔬 Ideal Candidate
- Completed (or near-completed) Master's degree in evolutionary biology, ecology, entomology, agricultural biology, or a related field
