🧴 PhD Position in Dermatology — Lund University
🇸🇪 Lund, Sweden
📌 Department: Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund, Faculty of Medicine
👤 Supervisor: Professor Artur Schmidtchen
⏰ Deadline: October 16, 2026
⏳ Duration: 4 years (fixed-term), starting December 1, 2026
📋 About the Project
This PhD sits within a translational dermatology group studying how the body's innate defenses regulate infection, inflammation, and wound healing — specifically through peptidomics, the study of bioactive peptides released during tissue repair. The project, "Peptidomics of Wound Fluid Guides the Discovery of Endogenous Peptides," will have you identifying and characterizing endogenous peptides involved in infection and inflammation, developing peptide enrichment and fractionation methods, running LC-MS/MS analyses (DDA and DIA), and mining the resulting datasets for proteolytic signatures and candidate peptides. Promising peptides are then tested in microbiological and cell-based assays for antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects — work carried out alongside Professor Artur Schmidtchen's seven-member group and in close collaboration with BioMS and Lund's proteomics/bioinformatics experts.
🔬 Ideal Candidate
- MSc in Engineering (Biotechnology), specializing in Pharmaceutical or Molecular Biotechnology
- Hands-on experience with SDS-PAGE, LC-MS/MS (DDA/DIA), and human sample handling
- Background in peptide biology/peptidomics and complex dataset analysis
- Familiarity with FragPipe, DIA-NN, and basic Python
- Practical experience with antibacterial dilution/diffusion assays
- Fluent Swedish and English
- Bonus: prior MS-based analysis, international project experience, method development
