A few weeks ago, our team was in Porto-Novo and Cotonou, Benin for the West Africa Feminist Data Summit 2026. Three days with feminist activists, data journalists, civic technologists, and women human rights defenders from across the region.
Here are some reflections from @AnnexKemanzi, who represented Pollicy at the summit
Understanding across Africa isn't just a language problem. Colonial rule left behind different systems of education, law, administration, and governance in Francophone, Anglophone, and Lusophone countries. Those systems never disappeared. They still shape how communities organize and how people relate to data today.
In Cotonou, where internet access is limited, the data conversations weren't about platforms or dashboards. They were about lived experience and community documentation. Digital inclusion means nothing if we're not accounting for the realities people actually live in.

Day 2 at SOR4D 2026, Bern: @BonaventureSK presented our 2nd paper, "Mapping the Platform Labour Care Work in Kenya"
Some of our findings: Housekeeper, nanny, driver, caregiver, cook, general domestic worker. Job titles for platform care work blur into each other, with no shared definition of what each one means.

We identified 5 types of platform care work, from casual gigs with zero contract to formal homecare backed by social security. Each comes with its own worker profile, and its own level of protection or lack of it.

Of the workers we surveyed, 68% have only a primary education and reach these platforms only through a broker.
We're using this data to push for better working conditions for domestic, tech and agricultural workers in Kenya.

That question sat at the center of Day 1 at the SOR4D Solution-oriented Research for Development conference 2026 in Bern, where we are presenting findings from our ongoing transdisciplinary research, "How Digital Spaces Foster Empowering, Gender-transformative Employment Policies and Women's Mobilisation in Kenya."

We're back from our little break after the festivities of #DataTamashaAfrica26 (more on this to come).
We'd love to share an important update: Over 1500 people applied for four spots in this year's Pollicy Fellowship across four different roles!
