the potential I see in other people isn’t real. It is a projection of what I would have done in their position.

The more someone complains, the less accurate their view of reality is. Because usually you're complaining about reality not meeting your expectations. But that's not reality's fault. It's your fault that reality didn't meet your expectations. Obviously stuff can happen in the world that's unfair, and that sucks, and you should point it out. But the complaining bit to yourself? Reality's 1,000 and 0. Undefeated. Total knockout. If you've got a friend who's always complaining, I don't think they understand how the world works. They straight up can't. Because if they did, their expectations would be closer to it, and they wouldn't be complaining as much.

Cynicism is a guarded response which sets yourself up against disappointment. Its role within the system is to protect you against experiencing anything bad. It is a pre-emptive strike against a perceived threat. If I tell myself that 'all women are bad', then I'm less likely to seek a relationship and, as a consequence, I'm never going to feel the pain of rejection. If I tell myself that 'everything is shit' or that 'things will never get better', then I am excused of ever having to try at anything. It's more comfortable to get fatalistic and call it pragmatism. The cope is framing hope as pathetic and embarrassing and optimism as delusion. The upside of never trying is never having to feel the pain of failure. And it’s a devil’s bargain.

The hard part of getting out of depression is not taking the steps... It's convincing the depressed mind to take the steps.

The gap between who you are and who you want to be predicts depression. The gap between who you are and who you believe you ought to be predicts anxiety. Two different distances, two different kinds of suffering. Timothy Strauman and Tory Higgins tested this by asking people to describe three versions of themselves: the person they actually are, the person they ideally want to be, and the person they feel they ought to be in other people's eyes. Counting the mismatches gave two numbers per participant. The Journal of Personality published the work in 1988. Participants whose actual self sat far from their ideal self reported more low mood two months later, along with frustration and anger turned inward. Those whose actual self sat far from their ought self reported agitation, plus resentment and anger pointed outward at other people. Each distance predicted its own set of symptoms and left the other one alone. A second study tested the links directly and pulled social anxiety apart from depression, since the two travel together often enough to be confused. Distance from the ought self attached itself to social anxiety. Distance from the ideal self went to depressive symptoms. Undergraduates in the 1980s, self-reported feelings, modest samples. Higgins spent the following decade dealing with studies that failed to reproduce the clean split. In 1999 he published a paper conceding that the specific relations show up only under certain conditions, mainly when a gap is large, easy to bring to mind and important to the person. A distinction worth keeping survives all of that hedging. Feeling hollow and feeling hunted come from different arithmetic, and whatever closes one gap tends to leave the other exactly where it was. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3230…
