Do you remember those little skits we staged in primary school for parents, grandparents and anyone else willing to be an audience?
We mimicked the exaggerated gait of an elderly relative, the perpetual cough, the fumbling with spectacles and sari, Ramu Kaka with his duster, and every other familiar character in the household.
Summer holidays were filled with this amateur theatre. By high school, thankfully, most of us had outgrown it and moved on to more meaningful pursuits.
The trouble with the Gandhi siblings is that they never seem to have had that opportunity. Homeschooled by circumstance, with college acquired in bits and pieces courtesy of their surname, they appear to have remained stuck in that stage of performative dramatics.
Parliament, it seems, has finally provided them with the stage they missed in childhood.
The skits, the theatrics, the exaggerated gestures - only the venue has changed. The level of maturity has not.
The unfortunate part is that a billion Indians are expected to sit through the performance.
Thank God for those 99 lost elections. They appear to have taught the country far more than they taught the actors.
And if current form is any indication, there are many more defeats coming up - definitely.
