As Director of Clinical Operations at the @UPMC Center for Clinical Neurophysiology and Director of the Cerebral Blood Flow Laboratory, Dr. Balzer has dedicated his career to advancing intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and patient safety. Congratulations to Parthasarathy Thirumala, MD, Professor in the Dept. of Neurological Surgery and Director of the UPMC Center of Clinical Neurophysiology, on the launch of his startup READE.ai, bringing AI-powered brain monitoring to the operating room. With support from Pitt's Commercialization Gap Fund and in collaboration with Dr. Shyam Visweswaran of the Dept. of Biomedical Informatics, Dr. Thirumala is developing a platform to detect cerebral ischemia in real time during surgery, addressing a critical gap in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring across millions of at-risk procedures nationwide.
