A new federally funded research initiative aims to improve how fetal health is monitored during labor and delivery. UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital will serve as a clinical testing site for OMEGA, an innovative wearable monitoring system designed to provide a more complete picture of maternal and fetal health during childbirth. As one of the region's highest-volume labor and delivery units, Magee will help researchers evaluate and refine the technology with input from the people who will use it most. "This project is exciting and unique because we are integrating the end users, patients, clinicians and health systems, into the design process from the beginning," said Dr. Hyagriv Simhan, UPMC's director of clinical innovation for women's health, and MWRI investigator. The multi-institution collaboration brings together experts from across the country to help clinicians better identify fetal distress, support timely care decisions, and advance tools that could improve outcomes for mothers and babies.
