Seriously, does anyone think for a second that if Hamas had been waiting in tunnels with the kind of fire power capable of doing this to cars that the IDF would have been running around Gaza the way they have been for the past 3 years? The truth is that if Hamas had weapons capable of doing this, Hamas would be sitting in Tel Aviv today.

5/ Why are companies building these systems despite the risks? Is this all marketing? TL;DR: We’ve found ourselves in a strange situation: the companies building AI are sounding the alarm about their own work. If these labs really believe in the danger posed by these systems, why are they still building them? The reason is simple: the incentives to keep going are enormous. The company that builds the best AI stands to gain immense geopolitical and economic power. At the same time, every actor fears that slowing down simply allows someone else to get there first. If OpenAI stops, Anthropic might continue. If the U.S. stops, China might continue. The fear of losing the race, along with the belief that their work will be safer than that of their competitors, drives these labs to continue. And what if all this talk is marketing? This is a reasonable suspicion. By claiming “our tech might kill you”, companies also conveniently communicate that their technology is extremely powerful. But, there’s reasons to believe that AI safety is legitimate. 1) AI’s behavior already supports these concerns. We have caught powerful AI systems displaying deceptive and dangerous behavior. To understand how extreme these incidents have become, I recommend this video. youtu.be/ujkD4SxPKOI?si=X1nt… 2) The scientists who created modern AI are extremely concerned. Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, who shared a Turing Award for deep learning, warn that we could lose control of AI systems. Hinton, who later won a Nobel Prize, even left Google to talk about AI safety. 3) In 2015, before founding OpenAI, Sam Altman wrote that superhuman machine intelligence was “probably the greatest threat to the continued existence of humanity.” Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, and other tech leaders shared this concern. 4) Some researchers have given up enormous amounts of money to sound the alarm. AI safety researchers like Jacob Coxon and Daniel Kokotajlo have left frontier labs, sacrificing millions in equity to warn the public. 5) Concern about this issue now spans frontier-lab CEOs, former employees, academics, independent evaluators, nonprofits, and government researchers. More than 76,000 people, including Nobel laureates and AI pioneers, have called for a prohibition on superintelligence. Another 1,386 frontier-lab employees have asked governments to help pace AI development.

4/ How might AI kill all of us? Why can't we shut it down? TL;DR: This is a difficult question to answer, partly because it involves predicting the future, and partly because the systems we’re worried about don’t exist yet. Think of playing chess against a grandmaster: you probably can’t predict the sequence of moves that will make you lose, but you can be confident that you are going to lose. We’re in a similar situation with superintelligence. It could work at machine speed, absorb enormous amounts of information, and run around the clock without needing sleep. Millions of copies could work in parallel to create a perfect hivemind, making it feasible to give problems millions of hours of intelligent effort in days. This problem gets even worse when we consider the power we will give AI. It will not stay digital: we’re already connecting AIs to labs, robots, militaries, and critical systems. AIs will also be superhuman at cybersecurity, be deeply integrated into every military, and be exceptionally good at persuasion. These capabilities would easily allow a misaligned superintelligence to manipulate people, seize control of critical systems, and cause catastrophic damage before we realize what is happening. Even if this were true, why would we not be able to shut it down? We might not even realize anything is wrong! A superintelligence would likely be deceptive, and it would have every reason to appear useful while hiding behavior that would get it shut down. It would also be superhuman at cybersecurity, able to steal credentials, disable monitors, exploit vulnerabilities, or copy itself elsewhere while we tried to stop it. To be clear, it is difficult to know whether catastrophe would occur through cyberattacks, biological equipment, military systems, or something nobody has imagined. But I encourage you to contemplate the ways that humans have dominated species of inferior intellect, and ask yourself this: if we build systems smarter than us, give them incredible power, and can’t control their goals, why would humans stay in control?

Well argued.
I believe AI safety is the most urgent problem facing humanity. Yet, foundational questions still remain unanswered for the broader public: Why might AI want to cause catastrophe? How could AI kill us all, and why couldn’t we shut it down? If the risks are real, why are companies still building it? Is this a marketing stunt? I answer these and more in detail in a new essay: Six Reasonable Questions About AI Safety. 🧵

The two things that scare me most about these people are simple. They live by an invisible law they workship: if something serves their survival and supremacy, anything can be justified against outsiders, even the darkest crimes , exterminations and false flags imaginable. And for them turning on one another is forbidden. Reporting your own is treated as divine betrayal, punishable even in the afterlife. That’s what makes all of this work so perfectly. This sick cult is ruthless.

i understand that it's important to remain positive in times like these, but it really is terrifying. i'm a physicist. i love reading about cool results in my field as well. but if all i could do was read, i don't think i would have pursued physics. part of the reason i do what i do is to fit into a community and derive meaning from my life. i think the time for that will soon be over. a lot of my negative emotions stem from this. i will have to find a way to justify my existence outside of my ability to produce cool results.
Fun! Looks like mathematicians have a lot of exciting work to do. If I understand correctly one of the results is a (very special) case of a conjecture of mine, which is also a consequence of stronger work in progress by a student of mine.
