Purdue Extension agriculture and natural resources educators, specialists and staff from across Indiana gathered for their annual retreat to learn from one another, share ideas and strengthen the work they do every day with farmers, landowners and communities.

Some ugly stalk rots starting to show up in areas of Indiana. Something to watch out for this fall. Best thing to do is prioritize the fields that have it and get the corn out of the field asap.

“Fall soil samples collected after harvest (up to 6 weeks after the R8 growth stage) can be useful to monitor changes in [root-knot nematode] population densities or to make management decisions for the subsequent cropping season. Sclerotinia crown and stem rot of alfalfa is most damaging during the first production or harvest year.
If conditions favor disease after seeding a new stand, complete loss can occur. Reduced biomass and poor yield may be observed if stands are affected within the first year of planting.

There are five major mycotoxins associated with ear rots. Toxic effects vary by type, concentration, exposure, and animal species.
If a field has kernel or ear rot problems (10%+ of ears are moldy), test for mycotoxins.
