Symptoms of corn stunt are being observed this season in late planted corn in OK
Growers from all US can have corn leaf samples tested for FREE at my lab
Please contact me if you suspect corn stunt symptoms in your field
ALT Illustration showing the primary components of the corn stunt disease cycle on corn. The corn leafhopper acquires the corn stunt pathogens (corn stunt spiroplasma (CSS), maize bushy stunt phytoplasma (MBSP), and maize rayado fino virus (MRFV)) from infected corn plant tissues. The pathogens (represented as the blue dots) undergo an incubation period during which they replicate within the insect, after which they are transmitted to healthy plants by the corn leafhopper's feeding. The ranges of days required for each stage (acquisition, incubation in the vector, transmission, and incubation in the plant) are indicated. The color, size, and shape of the organisms are stylized. Very pleased to share our new study revealing insights into the complexity and diversity of leafhopper microbiomes, including Dalbulus maidis. Grateful to @Edel_PLopez for coordinating this work and to @TPellegrinetti, for the brilliant writing. lnkd.in/dUJQPPZr
Drought intensification and eastern expansion continues with Oklahoma being in the bullseye for flash drought in the North American continent. More than 62% of the state is now in at least severe drought. ticker.mesonet.org/#okwx#okmesonet
ALT Graphic titled βDrought Continues to Surgeβ showing the Aug. 18, 2026 U.S. Drought Monitor for Oklahoma and the change over the previous month. Drought now covers 94.64% of the state, with 62.21% in severe drought or worse (D2βD4), 34.94% in extreme drought or worse (D3βD4), and 8.68% in exceptional drought (D4). No part of Oklahoma is drought-free; the remaining 5.36% is abnormally dry. The worst conditions are concentrated across western Oklahoma, where a large area is in extreme drought and exceptional drought is centered in the west-central part of the state. Moderate to severe drought covers much of central and eastern Oklahoma. The one-month change map shows widespread deterioration across nearly the entire state, generally by one or two drought categories, with isolated areas worsening by three categories.
Stalk rots are very common in Oklahoma corn fields
Growers should assess the standability of the the crop using the βpinch testβ or βpush upβ test to decide which fields harvest first
Thank you to all who braved the heat at todays Chickasha Demo Day. We hit our goals of small groups and good interactions. So thankful for all who contributed today! Keep on the look out for a spring event in NC Ok which will hit wheat, canola, soybean, corn and sorghum
Gray leaf spot and bacterial leaf streak can look similar on corn leaves, but management is different. Fungicides work against gray leaf spot, but not bacterial leaf streak.
Both diseases produce long lesions between leaf veins. Gray leaf spot lesions are rectangular with straight edges. Bacterial leaf streak lesions are tan to brown with wavy margins.
A helpful diagnostic trick: hold the leaf up to the light. Bacterial lesions often show bright yellow halos, unlike gray leaf spot.

Our latest study on the early spread of the corn stunt disease complex in southern Brazil is now published! Our findings provide insights into disease spread under conditions typical of smallholder farming systems.

Diplodia leaf streak can produce lesions 12β and longer. Only the second time Iβve run across them this long. Remember that NCLB lesions tend to be 2-4β in length. The other major difference would be the presence of pycnidia producing chains of conidia in DLS lesions #mscrops
Two days of corn field calls means we went from quiet to some diseases present. Donβt confuse Diplodia leaf streak (short lesion) with NCLB (longer). Lesions are generally shorter, and Diplodia produces pycnidia (pepper grains) in the leaf (close-up photo w/out pen) #mscrops
