"Suicidal Empathy" This is one of the most fascinating political phenomena of our time. The term refers to a situation where compassion becomes so detached from self-preservation that people begin supporting ideas, policies, or movements that may ultimately harm the very society they are trying to improve. Empathy is a good thing. A society without empathy quickly becomes cold and brutal. But empathy without wisdom can be just as dangerous as cruelty. Take the immigration debate going on in many countries across the world today. Many liberals, particularly liberal women, have championed open-door policies in the name of compassion and diversity. The intention is often presented as noble: helping people fleeing poverty, conflict, or persecution. The problem is that this compassion is applied without asking difficult questions about integration, cultural compatibility, criminality, or the long-term consequences for the host society. When crimes such as sexual assaults, gang violence, or other serious offences are committed by illegal immigrants, many people become reluctant to discuss the issue honestly because they fear being labelled intolerant or prejudiced. Yet the victims of these crimes are often ordinary citizens, especially women and children. This creates a paradox. The very people advocating for policies in the name of protecting vulnerable groups can sometimes find those same vulnerable groups bearing the greatest risks when those policies fail. The contradiction becomes even more apparent when discussing women's rights. Many feminist activists have spent decades fighting for equality, freedom of expression, bodily autonomy, and legal protections for women. Yet some of these same activists also defend ideologies, cultures, or religious traditions that place significant restrictions on women. Let's take Islam for example. In Islam, women are not regarded as equal to men. A man can marry up to 4 wives, he can flog his wife, and the women don't sit in the same section as the men in the mosques and during prayers So, if these traditional Islamic practices do not sit comfortably alongside modern feminist ideals, why are these liberals supporting and even romanticizing Islam? The same goes for their support of trans women who are basically men pretending to be women. These men beat women at sports to win medals that women should have won, yet feminists support them. What puzzles many observers is the apparent unwillingness to acknowledge these tensions. How do you welcome something that fundamentally challenge the values you claim to be defending? How do you advocate for a system while refusing to examine its potential consequences? A healthy society needs both compassion and discernment. Compassion tells us to care. Discernment tells us to be careful. The moment we abandon either one, we stop making wise decisions and start making emotional ones. And history is full of examples where good intentions alone were not enough to prevent bad outcomes. Sadly, I'm not even sure the intentions here are even good on the first place.
