One week after 9/11, the networks stopped showing the planes hitting the towers. On September 17, 2001, ABC News president David Westin ordered that footage of the jets striking the World Trade Center (and of the towers exploding and collapsing) would no longer air. Other networks quickly cut back the same images. Think about that. The deadliest attack on American soil. Still raw. Still unfolding. And the federally licensed “news” operations decided the pictures were too much. These are the same networks built on “if it bleeds, it leads.” They looped car chases, school shootings, and disaster footage for ratings. But the defining images of that day? Suddenly “gratuitous.” Most people never noticed. The footage vanished from regular rotation. A generation grew up with a sanitized 9/11: a date, a slogan, a lesson plan- not the second plane, not the collapse, not the people jumping to their deaths, not the last calls home to say goodbye, not first responders running in and never coming out. The attack was used to justify years of war and thousands of American lives. The video of what actually happened was treated as too disturbing for television. That’s the tell. When media decides which horrors the public is allowed to see, it decides which memories survive. Every skipped clip, every softened recap, every “some people did something” version trains people to forget what they never really saw. Images shape memory. Memory shapes politics. And once the pictures leave the air, the story gets rewritten by whoever still controls the microphone. Why do we still treat those networks as the official record? When is enough enough?
