The end of an era as Adrian Boyle hands over the reins and I become RCEM president as of Sept 11th. He’s been immense. Big shoes to fill. Thanks to Adrian for his tireless efforts over the last 3 years.
Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine as Dr Ian ‘Higgi’ Higginson officially takes on the role of President, bringing years of experience as VP and a strong track record in tackling crowding, promoting sustainable EM, and improving workplace culture.

As Dr Adrian Boyle hands over the Presidency of RCEM, we reflect on a tenure defined by advocacy, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the specialty.
Adrian’s leadership has spanned a period of immense challenge and transformation in Emergency Medicine. From winter pressures to workforce strain, he has consistently championed the needs of patients and clinicians alike.

The themes in this thread are common across all specialities, and in many other aspects of clinical leadership. If clinical leadership is truly valued then it needs to be nurtured and supported. Otherwise it’s empty rhetoric, with clinicians paying the price.

The long-awaited Urgent and Emergency Care plan for 25/26 has been published this morning.
We welcome the commitment to publish A&E data for every individual hospital (which we had called for) but are less impressed with the watering down of the pledge to end degrading and dangerous 12+ ED waits.

@RCollEM have been saying this for years. Meanwhile in England @NHSE/@DHSCgovuk touting all sorts of demand management ideas as the cure for crowding (won’t work), whilst avoiding critical investment in hospital capacity, and social care. Sticking plasters don’t heal deep wounds
We tend to assume that the reason why it takes so long to treat patients in A&E is to do with the number of A&E attendances.

It was a pleasure to be in Parliament for this launch and to meet Dr Allin-Khan. Along with other strong advocates for the provision of decent Emergency Care.
Last week, I was proud to launch the @APPGEmgcyCare in Parliament.
With over 16,600 lives lost last year due to long A&E waits, we must ensure emergency care is at the front of Government plans to improve our NHS.
I am pleased to be working with @RCollEM to demand change.
