There is a throwaway line in a WSJ story about the Seattle mayor’s failures about how reps from her admin traveled to SF to learn how Lurie was leading such a successful turnaround and were stunned by how it seemed to be connected to hiring competent people who know what they’re doing.
Nordstrom Rack will open next year at 2 Stockton Street, near Union Square! Three years ago, companies were leaving San Francisco. Today, they want to be here, and Nordstrom Rack’s decision to return to the heart of our city is another sign of the growing confidence in San Francisco. The 50,000 square foot Nordstrom Rack is just the latest example of retail coming back downtown.  We're making our streets safer and cleaner, bringing people back downtown, cutting red tape, and creating the conditions for businesses to succeed. I'm thrilled that Nordstrom is choosing to invest in San Francisco again, and look forward to welcoming Nordstrom Rack as we continue building on our city's momentum.

Only on the West Coast would Mayor Lurie be considered a moderate. Everywhere else, the dude would be a flaming radical. We're talking about a town where saying 'maybe we shouldn't hand out free crack pipes' makes you Literally Hitler™️. --Shannon

Mayor Wilson has no experience in politics, administration, or management. Our culture has decided that being a talisman is enough for an elected official, competence be damned. This (and people like Trump) are the result of that process, which has been building for 40 years.

King County Homeless authority Auditors show $17 million missing and no accountability just a pablum joint statement by Wilson and King Cnty Exec that they are going to put in more oversight. SF Lurie fired all these agencies and asked for RFPs with real KPIs! 🧐🧐

Local government should be about fixing potholes, providing police, making sure the trash gets collected and the schools are good. That’s it. It shouldn’t be about fighting racism or climate change or fighting the patriarchy. If you run things competently, you will be fine.

That quote is not from a rep in her admin and he is not stunned. It's a back-handed shot at Wilson about competence in governance that is lacking.

In fairness, Sholes isn't part of the admin and has been a consistently ignored voice on behalf of the sane biz community (not to be confused with the captured nut biz community) to implement better policy and hire better people.

Agree with gist of your tweet. But the downtown seattle assn. is v pro biz and has been trying for years to get mayors to deal with pike/pine corridor crime/homeless. Effectively a chamber of commerce. You’re conflating mayor’s team and actually competent organization.

Literally, the opposite of the Trump administration. Hiring competent people (IE not people not Pete Hegseth, etc.) is a secret "hack" for governing properly.

For the record Jon Scoles knows what's up and he's taking a shot at the Mayor here. He has been an advocate for sound business policy and governance in the city. Basically, the mayor ignores him.

To be fair, the Downtown Seattle Association sounds like an independent business group whose reps were on the trip, not the mayor's people.

Wilson has shown repeatedly that she is open to looking at ideas that make government more effective, regardless of where they come from. I am genuinely impressed.

Jon Scholes came to Seattle Children's to talk about the work his org is doing downtown. Seemed like a decent guy doing good things, noy a politician or otherwise affiliated with the mayor.

The only reason anyone in Seattle should be looking at San Francisco is to know what to avoid and who to keep out of the city.

There is no secret here. Clean the streets, enforce the law, hire competent people, and revitalization will occur. Let the ideology run the city, hire incompetent because they check the diversity requirements, let the crime run rampant in the name of whatever, and you will have a disaster.

Yes you’ll often find business leaders EXTREMELY happy to work with you if you hand them millions in tax incentives and create special tax zones for them. I’m unsure why that works but it seems the very serious Lurie admin people have figured out the secret!

I think he’s complimenting and seeing that as the way forward. The downtown association is a business association. Not a mayoral subcommittee. It’s more of a ‘hey, this is the way’

Kommie Katie’s only job prior to this one was “leading” the Transit Riders Union, an NGO fully funded by SEIU Local 775. SEIU plants have largely infiltrated Seattle/King County govt, and it shows, because you wouldn’t hire them to pick up dog shit off your lawn. Retardsville.

Yes, when friends ask me how I think Lurie is doing my answer is "he's hired good people and they're (mostly) implementing the right policies." They've basically done what was covered here in a response to @Noahpinion about how to fix blue city governance darche.me/blog/answering-noa…

I have an aunt who has worked for the City for decades. She describes the culture as extremely hierarchical and deferential. You don’t question superiors, you obey.
