Sixty-nine years ago today, the Little Rock Nine walked through the doors of Little Rock Central High School under the protection of the 101st Airborne Division for their first full day of classes, helping change the course of our nation's history. Earlier this year, following my HBCU Summit at Arkansas Baptist College, my friend and fellow HBCU Caucus Co-Chair, Congresswoman Alma Adams, joined me and Preserve Arkansas to walk the halls of Central High and reflect on the courage of the Little Rock Nine. Central High is more than a landmark in Little Rock. It is a place where American history was made and a reminder of the courage it takes to ensure our nation lives up to its founding promise of equality. During National HBCU Week, I’m proud to celebrate the important role our four HBCUs in central Arkansas play in educating the next generation of leaders. This week, the Department of Education announced more than $174 million in additional funding to strengthen HBCUs across the country. As Co-Chair of the Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, I’ve worked across the aisle to build on that commitment. This Congress, I introduced the HBCU Research Capacity Act to help HBCUs better compete for federal research funding and the bipartisan IGNITE HBCU Excellence Act to invest in campus infrastructure, technology, research, and workforce development. Happy 79th Birthday to the United States Air Force! Every time I visit Little Rock Air Force Base, I come away impressed by the Airmen who serve there and the pride they take in their mission. That same dedication can be found in Airmen around the world. Whether delivering critical cargo from a C-130, providing air support to troops on the ground, or flying halfway around the world to strike a target, their skill, precision, and resolve have made our Air Force the most dominant in the history of the world. Scipio A. Jones was a pivotal figure in American history, advancing civil rights with his landmark victory in Moore v. Dempsey. In defending the Elaine Twelve, Scipio Jones set a precedent that would be used in cases like Brown v. Board of Education, which notably led to the Little Rock Nine and the integration of schools across America. I testified before the House Natural Resources Committee on my Scipio Jones House Assessment Act earlier this week. My bill directs the Department of the Interior to study the feasibility of including his historic Little Rock home in the National Park System while maintaining local control. Always good to catch up with friends from the Texas Lyceum. Last night, I joined @RepFrenchHill, Jesse Ozuna, and Emily Kitchener for a conversation about Texas, economic development, and the work happening in communities across our state. The Texas Lyceum has brought leaders from different backgrounds and perspectives together for decades to discuss the issues facing Texas. I always enjoy reconnecting with fellow members and continuing those conversations here in Washington.
