U.S. House Committee on Financial Services Republicans – Chairman @RepFrenchHill

Washington, D.C.
This week, @HUDgov hosted its “Innovating Housing Showcase” on the National Mall, bringing together leaders from across the housing industry to discuss the important steps Congress is taking to make homeownership more accessible. The Committee’s 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act was featured prominently throughout the showcase, highlighting how the legislation can help expand housing opportunities and make homeownership more attainable for Americans.
Homeownership is woven into our nation’s story and is central to the American Dream. For another 250 years and beyond, American innovation will continue to expand homeownership to meet our needs — in every community, every environment, and through every challenge ahead. 🇺🇸

Iowa deputies told me they were watching scammers clean out Iowans' savings and had no way to follow the money. That's the problem I built the GUARD Act to fix. This week it passed the House, and my TRAPS Act cleared @financialcmte to set up a federal task force against these scams. Two steps closer to giving law enforcement what they need and protecting Iowans' hard-earned savings.

Today, I welcomed the @FinancialCmte Subcommittee on Financial Institutions to the Bluegrass for a field hearing on the Main Street Capital Access Act. This bill would expand access to capital that fuels the American dream for families, farmers, and small businesses. Thank you to @eku for hosting and @RepTroyDowning and @Rep_Davidson for attending.

Stopping scammers isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue. It’s an American issue. That’s why our TRAPS Act passed @financialcmte 49-0.

At this week’s @FinancialCmte hearing, I was glad to have the opportunity to thank Secretary Bessent for working alongside me and my colleagues to deliver SALT relief. His partnership helped us get this across the finish line and put more money back in Long Islanders’ pockets.

WATCH: @Rep_Davidson question Mr. Aud on the local impact community banks have, to which he responded: "We will root for community banks, and it's friendly competition. Friendly competition leads to good results for our customers there in the community, which is what we're trying to provide. There's plenty of business out there for all of us, and it's the community banks that really make everything work within communities of our size." 📺⬇️

Today in Kentucky, I joined @RepAndyBarr and the Financial Institutions Subcommittee for a field hearing on the Main Street Capital Access Act. Community banks are essential to rural America, especially in Montana, where they support family farms across our state. We talked about cutting unnecessary red tape and reversing consolidation. We also discussed how to expand access to capital for small businesses and local communities. The House passed the bill in July with bipartisan support.
Watch: @RepTroyDowning on how Dodd-Frank has hurt community banks: "Community banks face many challenges that prevent new bank formation or lead to consolidation. So, in 2008, in Montana, there were 64 state-chartered banks. And today, there are 33. So, we lost almost half. And a lot of this can be traced directly back to the passage of Dodd-Frank." 📺⬇️

A local business employs people in its community and serves the people who live there. The Main Street Capital Access Act makes it easier and faster for that business to borrow from a bank in the same community. At today's field hearing, we heard from local bankers who are doing that lending under rules built for the largest institutions in the country. This bill scales those requirements to the size of the bank, so more of their resources and time go into strengthening Main Street.

WATCH: @RepAndyBarr questions Mr. Hawkins on how important community banks are to unlocking affordable housing, to which he answered: "It's critical that we find local community banks who understand the market and want to participate in that market, as opposed to some large metro market. What we've seen recently is we've been able to secure these housing credits and have had a hard time at a national level marketing those large institutions. And in every case, when we go to community banks, they're excited about finding ways to serve their communities. They want to see this housing built." 📺⬇️

WATCH: @RepAndyBarr on the importance of the Main Street Capital Access Act: "The Main Street Capital Access Act was developed in response to that one-size-fits-all approach, with the intention to help community banks thrive, expand, and support the growth of new banks. Key provisions in Title Two, like the TAILOR Act and my TIER Act, Community Bank Regulatory Tailoring Act, aimed to reduce regulatory burdens on lower-risk and smaller financial institutions by raising asset thresholds and requiring regulatory thresholds to adjust over time for economic growth or inflation." 📺⬇️

WATCH: Financial Institutions Subcommittee Chairman @RepAndyBarr delivers opening remarks at today's field hearing: "The Main Street Capital Access Act opens the door for new bank formation—improving transparency in the chartering process, making applications more predictable, and ensuring rural and underserved communities can once again see new institutions form instead of watching their local banks disappear." 📺⬇️
