I was passed these messages from a private Tamil community group. I removed the identity of the H-1B worker because this is not about attacking him. Instead, look at what happened around him. First, he develops an immigration problem after losing his job. Next, someone in the group asks whether they can “steer some help” through Congressman Suhas Subramanyam’s office. Another member says he had just met Subramanyam at an event and could arrange a call. Then, within the same conversation: “I reached out to Suhas and emailed him and forwarded to his immigration team.” — “Connecting his family to Suhas in the morning.” You may have missed it, but the messages say the worker lives in Herndon. Herndon in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. Subramanyam represents the 10th District. House Ethics guidance says members generally should not devote official resources to casework for people outside their district and can instead refer them to their own representative or senators. I don’t think Subramanyam was summoned based on the district he represents. Remember, this conversation is taking place inside a Tamil community network. So, it’s worth noting that Subramanyam has South Indian family roots, his father grew up in Chennai and he was a congressional co-sponsor of the resolution recognizing Tamil Language and Heritage Month. Sure, we don’t have proof of preferential treatment or what his office ultimately did. But we did get an unusually candid look at how political access in ethnic networks functions: Private ethnic community → personal connection → member of Congress → congressional immigration team. Despite being unable to vote and being out of district, people around him apparently knew exactly who to contact and claimed the personal access to get his case in front of a congressional office. The question I want answered is simple: why was this case being routed through Suhas Subramanyam and what did his office do with it?
