With strong winds and heavy rain expected from the approaching nor’easter, power outages are possible across Rhode Island. If you use a generator, always operate it outdoors and at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, windows, and vents. Never use a generator inside a home, garage, basement, or other enclosed space due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Strong coastal winds can create dangerous surf, large waves, and powerful rip currents along Rhode Island beaches.
If you’re near the coast:
• Stay out of the water when conditions are dangerous.
• Keep away from rocks, jetties, and seawalls.
• Never turn your back on the ocean.
• Keep children and pets away from the water’s edge.
• Caught in a rip current? Stay calm, float, and swim parallel to shore until you’re out of the current.

Storms can cause power outages, frozen pipes, and other emergencies that may impact the safety of your food and water. Knowing what to do before, during, and after an outage can help keep you and your family safe.
🧊 Prepare for a power outage: Turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting before a storm to help food stay cold longer.
🌡️ Keep food at safe temperatures: Keep hot foods above 135°F and cold foods below 40°F for as long as possible. Use a food thermometer to monitor temperatures and determine when food is no longer safe to eat.
🚨 When in doubt, throw it out! Never risk eating food that may have been exposed to unsafe temperatures.

🚤 Boat Safe. Stay Safe. 🌊
Before you head out on the water, make sure you’re prepared to have a safe and enjoyable day on the boat!
🦺 Wear your life jacket: Rhode Island law requires every boater to have a personal flotation device (PFD) on board. Everyone using a canoe, kayak, paddleboard, or other paddle craft must wear a properly fitted, USCG-approved life jacket at all times. Children under 13 must also wear a properly fitted life jacket.
📚 Know before you go: Operators born after January 1, 1986, and anyone operating a personal watercraft, must have a boating safety certification.
🍺 Boat sober: Alcohol is the top known contributing factor in fatal recreational boating accidents. Never operate a boat while impaired.
🚤 Ride safely: Passengers should remain in designated seating areas. Never ride on the bow without proper seating, and keep your feet and legs inside the boat while underway.
🚨 Give emergency responders room to work: If you’re within 300 feet of an emergency vessel displaying flashing lights, slow down and move over.
🧯 Check your gear: Before heading out, make sure your safety equipment is in good working order and that your fire extinguisher is up to date and ready to use.
🌊 Know the rules. Wear your PFD. Stay sober. Boat safe.

As part of our Preparedness Month campaign, we’re partnering with @wearerienergy to bring you important generator safety tips to help keep you and your family safe during a power outage.
If you’re using a portable generator:
🔌 Never connect a portable generator directly to your home’s electrical system.
🌳 Operate generators outdoors only and away from garages, doors, windows, and vents.
⚡ Use heavy-duty extension cords that are rated for generator use.
🔄 Start the generator before connecting appliances.
Generators can be lifesaving during a power outage, but when used incorrectly, they can create serious safety hazards.
