Death row inmate Christa Pike has requested that Tennessee use an all-female execution team if her Sept. 30 execution proceeds, according to her attorneys. Pike, 50, was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Knoxville Job Corps student. Pike was 18 at the time of the killing. Her attorneys cited Pike’s history of sexual abuse and PTSD in requesting an all-female execution team and are seeking clemency from Gov. Bill Lee. Pike has also challenged Tennessee’s lethal injection protocol, asking a court to allow her to be executed by hanging or through a central-line catheter instead of the state’s standard lethal injection method. If carried out, Pike’s execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville would make her the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
