🚨 DENTON COUNTY SCAM ALERT 🚨 This just happened to me. Someone impersonated the Denton County Sheriff’s Department, threatened me with criminal charges, and told me I could not tell anyone about the call. They claimed I had missed jury duty and needed to report to the sheriff’s department immediately. They said someone had signed for my jury duty paperwork and that they needed to compare my signature with the signature on that document. They even spoofed the sheriff’s department’s phone number. The number on my caller ID made it look like the sheriff’s department was actually calling. These people were convincing. They sounded official, had a story ready, and kept applying pressure. They insisted I stay on the phone. They told me I was under a “gag order” and could not tell anybody what was happening. They said I had charges against me and had to come in immediately. Think about that. They wanted me scared, isolated, and following their instructions without talking to anyone who might recognize the scam. We believe they were setting me up to stop at a kiosk and send Bitcoin or some other form of payment. Fortunately, we recognized the scam before it got that far. We notified the sheriff’s department about what happened. But I want people in Denton and throughout Denton County to hear about this before they get the same call. Do not let a convincing voice and an official looking phone number scare you into handing over your money or personal information. 🚩 A caller threatening you with charges and demanding immediate action. 🚩 A caller insisting you stay on the phone. 🚩 A caller telling you that you cannot speak to your spouse, family, or anyone else because of a supposed “gag order.” 🚩 A caller directing you to send money, buy cryptocurrency, purchase gift cards, or use a payment kiosk. HANG UP. Look up the agency’s official phone number yourself and call directly to verify the story. Do not trust the number on your caller ID or a number the caller gives you. If this happens to you, tell someone you trust. These scammers want you too frightened to stop and question them. Give yourself that moment to stop. And if you have already been targeted, do not be embarrassed into staying quiet. These people are practiced, persuasive, and deliberately using the fear of arrest to manipulate people. Please share this. Warn your parents, your adult children, your friends, and your neighbors. This happened to me today, and someone else could be getting that call right now. Local news teams, please help get the word out so more people recognize this scam before they lose money. #DentonCounty #DentonTX #DentonTexas #DFW #NorthTexas #ScamAlert #JuryDutyScam #PhoneScam #CallerIDSpoofing #ProtectYourFamily #DFWNews #WFAA #NBCDFW #FOX4 #CBSNewsTexas
